Hello All
We recently Picked up a 1982 John Deere 317. Our Plan is to Cannibalize it to use all of the part's that we need on a John Deere 316 Project that we are doing. It has the heavy Duty style steering pedestal Mounted diverter Valve on it. I can see that it has a round black Knob on the top of it, But when I try to Move the round black Ball Upward's, I assume that is what Places it into it's Diverter working Mode it won's Budge. Is the Valve Possibly froze up from the Tractor sitting too Long, or does there need to be Hydraulic Pressure supplied to it to Operate ? I do Understand what the diverter Valve is supposed to do as the Later style one's are seen on the Rear rock shaft cylinder of the 318's to lock out the cylinder while diverting Hydraulic Pressure to the front quick coupler Port's of the Tractor, So I get it's Purpose or function, but I am Not familiar with this style Heavy duty diverter Valve. The Tractor has a bad series one Kohler K-17 in it that does not run, so I can not start it to see if this Valve may work when supplied with Hydraulic pressure. If anyone out there has this style Valve I sure would appreciate your insight of how it is supposed to work. I am Going to remove the H-2 Spool Valve to Place it on our 316 as it is an H-1 Tractor, so I thought maybe Later on, I may add this Diverter Valve to my 1983 John Deere 318. Thank's in advance for any responses here as to how this Diverter Valve work's. Regards, Kurt

I have the style of diverter valve on one of my 317s. The valve should move freely with or without hydraulics on the tractor. The diverter valve functions a little differently than a lockout valve since it diverts the hydraulic flow. Raising and lowering the knob on the valve switches between two different circuits that the hydraulic lever controls. You can operate two different circuits from the same lever. This makes your H2 function as an H3 from the seat. I use my 4 way blade with a 33 tiller to level dirt in the garden. The out side lever angles the blade and raises and lowers the tiller with the diverter valve separately. It can also function as a lockout valve since it takes the place of a tee in the rockshaft/LH front hydraulic circuit.

Hello Guy's
I appreciate your responses and the Instalation diagram as well as the Picture of the Valve in diverted Position and the description of how it work's is a huge help here, Ya'll are the best help ever. Thanks, Kurt

I just finished installing the 0B001152 valve John Unes referenced in his post above on a 317. The valve Deere used has 3/8 NPT ports and the one from Energy Engineering comes with 1/2 NPT ports so I had to use some bushings. I had hoses made for the valve and bought the line from the front hydraulic port to the valve off ebay. Since I had to use bushings on the valve the holes for the lines didn't line up with the knockouts in the pedestal. I used the two mounting holes for the valve and drilled new holes for the lines. The knob that comes on the new valve is too big and hits the pedestal so I got the correct one from Deere. The valve is still available from Deere for around $160. The one from Energy Engineering was $80 to my door and it works just like my original one on my other 317.

Hello Justin
I removed the heavy duty diverter Valve from the 317 part's Tractor that we had before we scrapped it. It was Not fun getting to the Hydraulic lines on the back side of it but I was able to. Once I got it off I noticed that it was in the On Position and the valve shaft had some Rust and corrosion on it, That could Not be seen when it was Mounted on the Tractor. I feel if it were installed it may leak so for now it is in my Part's stash. The Only benefit I can see by placing one is for using a Model 54 Hydro four way blade on the Tractor. I do Not use my blade much, but it seems to me that the rear Mounted crew down Diverter Valve is a much easier way to go if installing one on my 318. Regards, Kurt

Kurt you are confusing the functions of the diveter valve and a shutoff valve. There is no on or off with the diverter valve. Basically you are giving a command to two separate circuits with the same control lever depending on the position of the diveter valve. This comes in very useful on the 317 with a 54 blade on the front and a 33 tiller on back. I can make my H2 function as an H3. I can also use a 54 blade on the front and a 3 pt on back with a ripper to move dirt. If all I had was a shutoff valve I would have to crawl under the tractor to angle the blade or move the 3pt.

Justin
