Just picked up a John Deere 318 today with a P218 onan. The guy I got it from said it ran great until one day he was shutting it off and it made a strange noise. Wouldn't restart......found out flywheel key was sheared. Replaced that and still wont start. I did a compression check and the left side has 75psi and the right has 125psi. Is this a bad valve??

Thanks,

the compression # that you have are NOT GOOD,
BUT it should still run.
when the P.O. replaced the key
if he did not use the proper key
the engine will be out of time.
the proper key keeps the ignition rotor in time.
thank you boomer ( the used onan engine parts guy )

Jeff, It will run but not as intended. Depending on how he wired it, safeties could be bypassed such as when you get off the seat and don't turn off the PTO for the mower deck. If you get a toe under the deck accidentally, its by by toe.

Hello Jeff
Running one of these 316's or 318's without the TDCM is Ingredient's for Disaster. That Black Box is the safety brian of the Tractor's wiring system and should really be wired in and working correctly as all of the Intended safety switch's on the Tractor. Regards, Kurt
