i am looking at a john Deere 322 with the 44 loader rear PTO and 3 pth with around 1300 hours and wondering things to look for on the tractor when purchasing
also how many hours do these engine typically last
the guy always stored it inside and said there isn't a scratch on it

Josh,

These engines can go many thousands of hours with proper maintenance. Potential issues are battery charging problems due to wiring overheating (which itself is caused by trying to charge a failed/completely dead battery) and some potential for cooling system deferred maintenance causing radiator issues. Later years have electric chokes and some members here find them to be a problem in very cold weather -- mine have not been a problem but the Pacific Northwest is not given to severe winters.

What year is the tractor? You can map it from the serial number as seen here. There was a 1992 year model that began with serial number M00322x110000 as well but not shown in this earlier illustration, and the newest of the ones I have owned is a 1992.:

Let us know what you decide -- my 322 tractors have always been my favorite model in this series.

First thing I would look for is someone bigger than me sitting on the seat saying he just bought it !!! Seriously though, I would check the things Chuck has mentioned, also check the transmission for leaks. I just had to replace the check valves on my 322 but I also have almost 2200hrs on mine.It sounds like a well looked after machine with all the goodies to make it very desirable. To bad there is never any in Ontario for sale!!

There is a 322 for sale on Kijiji right now in the Ottawa area. I have only ever seen one other for sale, local JD dealer had a bare 322 last spring for $2500
