I have a John Deere 332 diesel that will start fine when cold but when run for a while have a hard time getting started. Sometimes if you just hold key in start position it will start but sometimes not. Has anyone else ever had this problem?

Thanks

Is it turning over and just not getting fuel? Check fuel shut off (remove left tin) to see that it is working-you can hear it click back and forth. If not turning over check the safety switches in the system (PTO/s, nuetral, seat and depending on the year-brake). One of my 332's is a little touchy on the safety system-connector is loose near the starter not letting things engage.

Also check that the fuel filter is full and that you can hear the electric fuel pump ticking away.

Jeff sure sounds like one of the safety switches to me. I had the same problem with my 332 from time to time. It was the PTO switch. Wasn't fully disengaging when turned off. What lights come on the dash when you turn the key on ?

Jeff, It sounds like you need a starter improvement kit. My 332 sometimes would not start if I shut it off when it was warmed up. Now it starts no matter how long I have run it. The part number is am107421. It was the best $30+ dollars I spent. I had to place it in a different spot than the directions called for, but it works. I used lots of silicon to seal everything.

Daniel, Yes it will. I used it on my 332. The starting problem is based upon a drop in voltage as the tractor heats up with use. All the interlocks/safety switches create more resistance causing a voltage drop when they heat up. The kit creates a different path for the current to the starter while still insuring all the interlocks/safety switches are closed. Solving the failure to crank when the tractor is hot.

You could pull the wire off the starter solenoid and make a jumper straight to the battery, if its that wire/circuit thats problematic, it should crank right off going to the battery.

Could also check to see that you have 12 volts going to that wire in a hot restart attempt.

Thanks again guys......I also had thought about the starter improvement kit but was thinking to it wouldn't work on the 332. Will have to look what lights come on again. If I remember correctly it does nothing at starter not even click.

Jeff, did you get this figured out? I've had this very issue for a while. I thought I had it figured when I replaced the last relay in the safety switch chain and the problem went away for a while. It popped back up again and this time I'm 95% certain it's the PTO switch. I disconnected the plug on the switch with the two purple wires, jumpered the connector and it started. The 5% uncertainty is that I plugged it back into the switch and it started as well. Could have been just an intermittent connection, but I felt the two prongs on the back of the switch and one was loose so a new switch is on the way.

New PTO switch did NOT do the trick. So I bypassed all the safety switches by putting a jumper across pins 30 and 87 on the relay connector. Still no start when hot so that narrowed it to the ignition switch or the solenoid. When ignition was in the start position I had 12.5V at the purple wire on the solenoid, so bad solenoid it is. Rather than spring the $116 for one from Deere, I got an aftermarket for $30. We'll see how it lasts.
