So how come there are two engine oil fill spouts on the Yanmar engine? There is the upper one on top of the valve cover which I expected, but I noticed another one way down lower on the left side of the engine near the oil filter area. So what gives from an engine design standpoint?

Those engines can be used in different applications, and sometimes depending on what it's mounted in you might not be able to get to one or the other.
