So I ordered a new starter off the net for my john deere 70 (not a john deere part).....took the old one off, put the new one in. 2 things are going on now. When I first tried it, it sounded like it was going to start, then all of a sudden, this horrid noise started coming out instead of a normal turning over sound, almost like gears grinding. Secondly, I had to take off the motor cover in order to replace the starter, and the oil dipstick/filler is connected to it, it came a bit loose, like where it goes into the motor. Does the dipstick/filler just sit there? Seems like oil is oozing out......any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks for the help./....it looks like the dipstick just sits in there, and i didn't have it sitting in there enough with that "o" ring you speak of, so I realigned the dipstick and "o" ring. I used the mower to mow my lawn for about an hour the other day while pulling my newly acquired 50 trailer and no oil was spitting out so I think I'm good with that.... I also took everything apart that i had done originally to get the starter in,n put it all back together again.... seems like the starter is working fine now.

yes, i have that bracket, (nice picture, thanks) looks like i hadn't bolted the bracket at the correct height, there's a bit of wiggle room within the bracket. So i went to fire it up today, I do have a bad battery, so I jump it with another tractor. It was about to fire, then the starter was not engaging again, sounded like it was just spinning, so I gave up, could that be because of low battery power?

Yes it could be the battery . Don't jump with a big charger unless you pull the glass fuse on the rectifier you will burn out the charging system. I have also seen on the starter shaft rusted where the gear spins out to engage the flywheel and I have also seen the rubber below the gear swelled and rubs on the shroud I have ground many of the rubbers down.
