I’m restoring my JD420 and plan to have all the sheet metal sand blasted. Should I use JD Buff primer sealer straight over the bare metal or should I use an epoxy primer first?

Do you plan on paint or powder coat? I like self-etching primer as a good base for just about any brand of paint color. Chemistry is important...try to match the brand of primer to the same brand of paint.

I’m will be painting and plan to use factory John Deere paint with hardener. I read somewhere that the Turf Green and yellow look best over the John Deere buff primer, I just didn’t know how the JD primer works on bare metal.

Can you buy/try the JD primer in a spray can? assuming you will be using a paint gun/rig and not rattle cans. If so, do so...and experiment on similar bare metal. Time...for prep, and execution...is what limits the results you get. Don't get in a hurry and be willing to try things first, for top notch results.

Forgot to add...need to know the flash and dry times of primer and color coats, too. Respect that and the results are generally good.

I have used the JD buff primer on several of my tractors over bare sheet-metal as you mentioned with excellent results. Make sure you’re doing this outdoors or with a respirator if you’re applying it indoors, the fumes are very noxious.
I used spray can since I do nor have the skill, equipment or space.
