I have a Kohler 17 magnum on a older rider it has always started right up and ran good. until this summer I went to start it and it would crank over but would not start. after messing with it and some starting fluid and new plugs it finally started but didn't run right. but now after it sitting a week it doesn't want to start even with starting fluid.
anyone have any suggestions?

You sure it isn't a Magnum 18. Most likely the carburetor is gummed up and needs a total rebuild. At least that is where I would start. Roger

I had a Magnum 17 in a Cub (apparently it was a 18 badged as a 17) that had a problem with the carb float valve sticking closed. Unfortunately I don't remember what I did to resolve it, but I don't think it was a problem the last while before I sold it.

A carb cleaning should help.

This engine is also on a cub and says magnum 17. but you might be right it has sat all winter and then was a problem to start. I will check the carburetor. ..
