Hello All,

I am posting this for my great uncle. He has a 314 John Deere tractor and noticed that the shield part number m46983 has fallen off. It is not exactly clear how it came off but it might have been broken or the studs through clutch wore through the metal. The question is what does this shield, shield the PTO clutch from? He isn't clear where the shield is mounted actually. He says the holes on the shield seem wider than the two studs on the clutch assembly. He is wondering what this part is used for and if anyone thinks it is essential to replace it- finally if he does where does it go? The JD Parts site isn't abundantly clear?

Thanks,

Neil

Neil,
It's supposed to bolt on with the top two bolts on the PTO clutch. It's supposed to shield the clutch from muffler heat. Sometimes you can find them on ebay, but I had my 314 a couple of years before I found that it was supposed to have one. It's not been there as long as I've owned it. I mow about 3 acres, often over 90°. No damage, yet. Just remember, if you decide to replace it, the shield will bolt on the front of the magnet, not behind it. The tabs from the old one should still be there.

Kevin, my uncle said that the holes look worn out so its unclear if the bolts came loose or it just wiggled itself free and wore out the holes. I ordered him one on ebay last night for $18 all in when the deere part was like $40 which is crazy. I was looking at the 120/140 install document to try to figure out how to install this. I thought the bolt on the end of the crankshaft and then the for gapping bolts should give him access. My question is the the field winding coil is bolted to the engine itself. Is the shield bolted between the field winding coil and the engine or between the coil and the armature? Does the pulley have to come off to access these bolts?

Thanks for the help we both appreciate it!

Neil
