Picked up a JD 70 a few weeks ago. Going to restore it. It ran when i picked it up. What is this part on the right with the tin foil? Anyone have a link to a service/ parts manual to a JD 70? Its a 1974. Thanks!

That is the rectifier module, there should be two diodes in there not lumps of tin foil.

It is a Techumseh part, shows up in the manual for my old 1976 Troy Bilt Tiller. Probably take some digging to find one.

I have read on this forum that the rectifier module is not needed to start the tractor. Does this part have to do with charging the tractor while running? If someone could give more insight I would appreciate it. I plan on for now just starting the tractor with the pull cord. Hoping the rectifier not working will not prohibit the tractor for starting and to stay running. Thanks!

It take the place of a voltage regulator and a 70 will run without that and a battery if you rope start it. Roger
