I need some engine suggestions for my model 70. I was going to convert it to a horizontal shaft Kohler but that is not working out. I will be going with a vertical shaft, 8, 10 or 12 hp and I need some input as to what would fit with the least amount of modifications.
The project will only be driven around and NOT used for mowing. I can make a new engine mounting plate so I'm not worried about the engine mounting pattern.
Thanks. Don

I put an 8 HP Briggs from an R72 RER in my 69-60;

It took a little frame trimming, but not a lot;

Details are in a thread titled "Newly Found 60" of 2009.

Don, you might find some info in the archives about installing an 8 HP Briggs and a 10 HP Tecumseh in 60/70 frames.
Besides the JD 100, the Briggs engine with a stepped down crank was used in some off topic tractors. We found one in an old Craftsman. Dynamarks may have used it, too. This just in case you change your mind about a PTO clutch.
Another good candidate is the V100 10HP Tecumseh, also found in those tractors. It is a small frame engine, not much larger than the Briggs 8HP.
Whatever you find, check the hood support/grill to spark plug clearance. The 6-7's were pretty tight in there.
Sorry the horizonal didn't work out for you. I was looking forward to seeing it come alive!

I had to raise the grille and dash tower about 5 inches or so, also had to cut about 5 inches away from frame behind engine. I cut the clutch/brake pedal off and removed foot rests and converted it to a hand clutch setup. I used a hand clutch lever from an A on it. The battery is relocated to under the intake/carb behind the grille. I used a tank off an old Montgomery Wards tractor and mounted it where the battery used to be. I added model 100 running boards when I cut off the foot rests. I just need to work out the details for an electric clutch so I can use the mower and snow blower on it.

John,I really think it looks good the way it fits between the hood supports.I sure didn't notice all the changes you had to make so you did a good job.I like the hand clutch too.With the tools that I own and how I feel I think I'll go with something that will bolt in for my project. Thanks again for those pictures. Jim

Not too bad for a $2 tractor and $40 motor. Had it up and movable in less than a week. Had plenty of time to work on it since I was out of work for 3 months back then. I was very surprised when I got it out yesterday, it started up with a jump box and the same gas in the tank that was in it when it got stored 2 1/2 years ago.

I finally made a decision on the replacement motor. It's a Kawasaki 6hp vertical shaft. Fits well in the chassis but I need to make a new motor plate. Thanks for everyones help and advice.
Later. Don

Are there options for electric start?

Do you know what the engine model number is?

Travis and Mike,
The engine spec is " FJ180V-CS11-R " and it was purchased from Small Engine Warehouse in Dunkirk, IN. If you go to their web site you will find the spec on the engine. The engine has and needs a heavy flywheel in order to be used. This is the replacement engine for the John Deere 14SB walk behind mower and there is a electric start version called the 14SE. Check it out before you buy, this seems to be working out okay but one never knows what will come up. Price was $228.95 with shipping.
Later.
Don
