I want to replace the gasket between the front and rear differential housing. I am at the point where I have the 8 screws removed and gasket broke loose but the 2 halves do not seem to want to come apart and I do not want to damage anything. I did not remove the axles and did not separate the transmission as I didn't see a need to do that. Do those items need to be removed? Anyone have experience in this area? Help is appreciated.

I do not know much about the 140 internals but to get best help fast, always provide the year of the tractor and pictures help tremendously. Sometimes the serial numbers are required too because of difference in models made before and after a certain number.
(I don't understand how you can have the gasket broke loose without the halves being separated?)

I have a 1974 140 sn 63842. The images you show are the transmission and what I am referring to is what you show attaches to. By broke loose I mean I can slide a putty knife between the halves all the way around. I can even separate to the point of seeing the ends of the 2 dowel pins but the two halves do not separate and I feel there is something else that needs to be removed prior to them coming apart.

Ok , it's my understanding you want to separate #10 from #6 to replace #8.
But something seems to be holding it together after all 8 bolts are out.
Correct?
Now we need some one who has worked on these...I haven't ..sorry..
