So I picked up a 318 with onan b43 motor but with governor issue. Wants to open up with very little throttle. I thought it would be out of adjustment etc. I found the adjustment procedure on line from a tm1590 technical manual. I adjusted governor arm and spring, set dash pot for right clearance, but still no fix. I then noticed while playing with it that with all the linkage removed from the governor arm, if I rotate it away from carb I can lift the arm/shaft up out of the front housing about 2 inches? Is this right or should there be something on the end of the shaft on inside of engine to prevent this? I don't see anything on the JD parts diagram that shows anything on end of shaft, but it also doesn't show the dash pot. It's in the 323,xxx serial range. I'm new to 318 so I'm a little worried

i just came from checking one of mine in the shop.
NO MATTER the position of the arm,
the most i can pull it up is about 1/2".

i think it is time to pull the engine,
and do a partial tear down.
BUT first i would do a comp and leak down test.
this will help you to determine how much
you want to spend on a repair.
thank you. boomer ( the used onan engine parts guy )

Was afraid of that. After looking at it more, if I pull the engine it looks like I would have to pull the flywheel and gear cover to get access to governor shaft. I thinks that's as far as I want go for now if I can correct the problem doing this. I'll check compression first, have to borrow a compression tester.
