New engine for my model 70

I decided to go with a N.O.S.Tecumseh VH100 cast iron 10hp engine in my 60/70 project.
The Kawasaki would have worked nicely but this gives me 4 more hp and is closer to the original cast iron VH70.

Don a very rare Tecumseh that should work well for your 70. Did that engine come with a 7/8 inch crank or the standard 1 inch? Roger
Roger,
It's 1 inch diameter by 3 1/8 long, with a 1/4 inch wide keyway the full length, and tapped 3/8 - 24 thread.
It can be updated to electric start but I will leave it as is. Here's another view / picture.

Mike,
Thanks, The engine came out of Maryland brand new in the original box. Not cheap, but probably cheaper
than overhauling a used VH70, when trying to find parts, labor and ETC.

You made a good catch with that one, Don. Is it a lot taller than the VH70? It will be an interesting project that we all look forward to seeing a successful out come.

I don't recall your intended use for this tractor, but I finally found the very good thread about altering a PTO clutch to fit a 1.00" Briggs crankshaft. If you need it, look for the "JD 100 pto break shoe" thread below. It has some great sketches to explain a way to make it work.

Cool keep us posted on what needs to change to the tractor or engine to fit it.

I had to change all kinds of stuff to get the 8hp briggs in mine, these mowers were truley designed right around the Tecumseh's.
Dangit Mike...I thought I read where an 8hp out of a RER would be an easy swap. I haven't got that far but it's good to know going in.
No way. I had to change a ton of stuff. And my clutch isn't installed either. I made it all drive with the gear drive by changing the levers and links, then I tore that out and put a hydro in ;)
Tom,
It is taller but it will fit with clearance. The height isn't a problem, it's the width, depth and exhaust.
I will new a new motor plate and it will be hard mounted in the frame. I will only be using this tractor
at plow days for plowing so a PTO clutch is not needed. But I will check out the thread that you pointed out for ideas.
Thanks.
Don
What size plow you gona pull???

These little lawn tractors just dont have much traction since they are so light.
Mike,

The engine weighs 120 lbs, I have 12 inch wheel weights for the rear and a suitcase weight bracket for the front.
I'm going to go with a Sears style three point and a Sears style 6 inch plow.
It's just for fun, I not farming with it ..... smile.

Here's a photo of the 70 project. Lots to do but that's the best part.

Cant wait to see it with the 3pt hitch, and the engine mounted.
Looks great so far.
Mike,
The seat will be JD yellow and the spring will be JD green. But that Wheel Horse red adds
some class ... smile. I'm thinking of adding round fenders from a JD 110, what do you think?

This is a 6" brinly plow from a bolens 2 wheel walk behind I getto rigged to the hith plate just to see if it would pull it. Didnt have much traction.

Mike,
It looks like your plow stopped being a plow and became an anchor. Hopefully with good depth control
that shouldn't happen. The plow must have been digging deeper and deeper as you went forward until
it over came your traction. Thanks for the pictures.
