Hello,

I'm looking at a 1990 John Deere 318 at my local dealer for a project build. It my first project with this particular garden tractor and I'd like to get more information and experience here. It really feels good to be here.

Good luck with the 318 and welcome to WFM. The steering wheel will spin with no engine running to charge pump for power steering. As for engine making noises, the Onan was notorious for valve seat’s coming loose. Lots of safety built into tractor that could be preventing from starting.
