I found the grommet for the P218 and 220 engines, #HE122-0502, but not for my B43G.
Can someone confirm that it will or will not work on the B43G?
I think cooling is very important and the tractor came to me without this grommet in place.

I don't see how installing one can hurt anything in your B43G.

i have yet to see a J.D. onan engine
that came with the oil filter air seal
from the factory.
i know that case and grass hopper used them.

My '92 318 had the oil filter air seal when I bought it. It is now old and has a rip in it, I am waiting to get a replacement from the dealer.

Hiya,

My 318 didn't have it when I got it years ago, I use duct tape to seal it up and write the filter change date and hours on as well.

I have an Onan B series engine in my 318 and recently installed the grommet on it without issue.
The odd thing is that only the 420 parts manual shows the grommet...Gary

I bought an oil filter seal from onanparts.com for under 10.00 when I ordered other seals a little while back.

Dick, I just got one for my B43G in my 318. It fits fine although I have never seen one on a P218 so I can't say if it fits exactly the same way.

TOM DUFFY - What's the part number of the DUCT TAPE YOU USE to seal the oil filter to the engine shroud?

Just kidding... I was going to suggest the same thing yesterday! One size fits all!

I Installed one on my P-218 engine that has the sheet metal shroud off of a B-43 Engine. It will work fine and seals out the outward air flow. Regards, Kurt

I am going through this issue right now on getting a new oil filter grommet for my 420 . It somehow lost the new one I put on it a year or two ago . So I dug this old thread up . I checked the air flow out of the left and right side fronts , and was amazed at the lack of air flow from the right side (without grommet) , when compared to the left . That grommet makes one heck of a difference !

Just needed to get the part no. so I can get one from Cummins/Onan dealer in town . The last one was only a couple few bucks from them . This time I will glue or physically fasten somehow , to keep it from blowing out and getting lost . (-_-)

Now my only question is for Dick Schwing : Is that an Onan part number you posted in original question , or a John Deere part number ???

David, it has a HE prefix, so it's a Deere number. Take the HE off, and it's an Onan number. 122-0502 is a valid number on Onanparts.com site.

You can disregard the question if you see it , as I found the answer already . Same part number , except JD puts the HE in front of the Onan Part no.

I got the grommet yesterday from Cummins/Crosspoint . $3.02 + tax

Now the dilemma , is how exactly to keep the dad-blamed thing from blowing out again . I'm thinking of skimming with a layer of silicone between the sheet-metal housing and grommet . The bad part is that with the short filter , there is barely enough room to get a filter wrench strap on it to remove . Guess I'll worry 'bout that on the next oil change . I'm just happy knowing now that the right side of motor will be getting the correct air flow .

This is just like the sparkplug air flow grommet on the Kohler kt17s . Kohler makes one for the motor but I've never seen one installed on a 317. Does the onan have a setup like that?

I just got one from my JD dealer for $5 and some change. He had to order it, but it only took a couple of days. I have 2 318's, but only one had the grommet. I have never had the grommet come off the one 318 and it seems to keep a lot of debris from getting in the engine cooling fins. if the grommet did come off, wouldn't it be contained inside the side cover? Also, I remove the grommet before removing the oil filter and then after installing the new oil filter, I re-install the grommet.
