My 314 broke it's timing gear today. So, I know I need to replace that, but I'm reluctant to totally rebuild it. It's never used any oil until it was about time to change it. That includes the 90 degree plus days I mow for nearly 3hrs. Today after it died, I pulled the air cleaner and there was oil in the bottom. Not a lot, but it doesn't belong there. I really wasn't wanting to replace much on this engine. It has been running smoothly and not making any noises. What else will it most likely need besides the timing gear?

New rings and rod and piston I'd say. You don't really know what the gear took out when it broke. When you redo it I would eliminate the counter balance gears if you have them. Also keep track of the how many of the shims there are so you have an Idea of how many you will need to reassemble so you have the right amount of endplay.
Good Luck. I did two last winter with parts from Pats Small Engines. And all is well with them.

Dominic, Sorry, I was so mad when I started this, I meant governor. Now that I can see straight. Oh well I'm guessing there are lots of bits in there, but I don't think anything else broke. Luckily this k321 doesn't have the dreaded gears. Anyway, the 321 in my 140 did the same thing, while I was trying to adjust it! I'll probably do it first. The 314 will be getting new wiring and steering box rebuild later this year. Guess I'm lucky. It's 34 years old and it's never been opened. It deserves to be put back together right.
