I am trying to chase down an engine oil leak in a 140. I observed that it was leaking out the breather and small bubbles were escaping out the oil pan gasket. I have now opened-up and cleaned the breather and replaced the gaskets taking care on gasket placement and plate assembly to ensure the hole was at the bottom.

Upon start up the breather leak seems under control, but the oil pan leak is still there. Before I break into the oil pan, I want to know if there a way to check for proper breather operation without disassembling the entire unit? My reasoning is that if the breather is not working properly that the crankcase may be pressurizing causing the oil to bubble out

Any experienced thoughts out there on this situation would be appreciated.

You will need to find a pressure/vaccum gauge (manometer will work as long as its the right range) and stick it in the dipstick tube with a rubber cork that fits well (with the dipstick out of course) If your rings or bore are worn, you may be pressurizing the crankcase. Same with a bad breather.
