Oil Pressure Thread.

I figured I'd document my progress on this project incase anyone ever runs into the same issue. Seems like all at once I'm having issues with my 1952 B. 1st the electrical which was a bad battery post, and cables but still has a lag in starting up.

Since I bought the tractor only the amp gauge worked. There's coolant in the radiator, and the oil drips out when you open up the bolt on the crank case. No smoke, odd noise or roughness in running has ever happened playing with the tractor and the past owner seemed pretty honest , legit and knew what he was doing for maintenance on this tractor. Planning on using the tractor more I wanted to make sure everything was up to par. I replaced all my gauges....

Unfortunately that didn't help with oil pressure issue. I did a ton of research and read a lot of similar stories and replies.......even from others on this site to check the lines and pump. I'll open up the crank case........which I just resealed after discovering it was pinching my light wires. Hopefully I can shimmy my hands in there and not have to drop the pump. I've read it can be a clogged screen or line, sheared sqaure head, unhooked line, or bad pump. Figures crossed just a loose line. It leaks around the bottom cover so I wonder if this was open up before. I'll post more of my progress.

My buddy dropped off a gauge but couldn't help.

I couldn't get the dial attached to the crank case and he didn't have any other fittings so I got creative with my elbow. Figured if oil goes up the line it should reach the gauge. Maybe that's how you're suppose to do it?

Cleaning the plugs helped with start up and rough idle but new ones are in the works auto lite 386's were in it. Read those or 3116's ? Were recommended.
It took 5 seconds but got pressure.

I dialed up the pump and and got this.

I don't see in any book of mine the correct psi but I want to recall 10 - 15 should be the range.

I'm going to reinstall the old gauge after dialing in the pump and knowing I have pressure and see what happens.......

Had to run some errands in town so got some new plugs. $4.00 for 2 at O'Reilly's. $24.00 for a 4 pack at TSC...now I passed math an effort grade( thanks to George W Bush for no child left behind act) but that just doesn't make sense .

That's the TSC branding tax...for life out here! And they won't swap eggs or field work with you either...just deniro senor. Good work on the pressure gauge...fingers crossed that the gauge reading falls in spec.

Today is the 1 year anniversary of my accident. I had my last reconstruction fellow up on the worst knee yesterday. I lost 10% range of motion in that leg and will have numbness in the lower half of it forever. The bones healed well but there's some possible legitimate damage in there that couldn't get taken care of until the bones healed so now I'm waiting on workers comp to approve an mri on that leg with possible acl & pcl damage.

With all that I decided to go in the shop for some mental therapy.

Now that I know I have good oil pressure I put the new gauge on and sealed everything up.

I did this knowing EVERYTHING WILL WORK THIS TIME.

I put the new spark plugs in. These are the old ones I cleaned up a bit. With those cleaned the tractor fired up and idled a bit better. So hoping the new plugs fix that.

I just resealed the crankcase cover and letting that dry so I didn't fire up the tractor to check oil pressure THAT WILL READ ON THE NEW GAUGE.

I had more time to check out the oil breather. It's doing its job but was surprised on the crud in it. 2 solid pieces were in the middle.

The rust I thought I saw the other night on the filter was actually red primer.
I took an air hose up into the canister and blue out one smaller chunk of dirt. I've read hornets really like to make nests up in there.

I figured so I got it appart might as well rinse out the mesh in the canister.

Looking at both my books I can't seem to see how to remove the whole canister.

I can feel a bolt on top of it. Is that what's holding it on?

I have a back door to the exhaust from the past owner. I think I can get to the nut that way.

I was trying to relax a little too much now I'm paying for it, so figured time to sleep it off before I break something lol.

I think you will find that pulling the hood is the best way to get canister off tractor. May not be worth it. You’re probably going to find something else that needs attention. That’s how these projects are. One thing leads to another, and then another. Lol

That's how I feel this project is going. Bad clamps turned into a dead battery which lead to new clamps which lead to discovering the bad post on it, the new battery discovered no working lights which lead to taking the crank case cover off for a bad pinched wire. Rough idle and start up yet, led to new plugs new gauges to make it look nice lead to no oil preasure reading which lead to opening up the crank case and checking lines and pumps again. Figured since I got things taken appart and trying to figure out rough idle and start up, clean things up. Nothing seemed to alarming blowing air up into the mesh, just kind of figured be best to do. If I take the hood off then whats to stop me for starting an over haul lol. Just weird the tractor was fine up until all at once. This project might continue with carb work of nothing is solved, but tomorrow when everything is dried and sealed up I juump on the seat, she'll fire right up, gauges will read accurate and be running like a champ.

Everything was dry so I fired up the tractor. It was a lot better than before but still not the original fire up like I originally had . No oil pressure on the new gauge either.

While cranking it over. It smelt strongly of gas.

I got the tractor running and idled pretty good but I could just tell/hear something wasn't exactly right.

I opened up th oil check vaulve and oil dripped out. Nothing rushed out and it wasn't a stream, but putting my finger in it, it smelt faintly of gas.

I always turn off the gas, and let the tractor starve it's self out. So not sure or why this could or might have happened. I turned off the gas and bleed the carb and it was empty in a few seconds so know the shut off is working. I usually keep track of the gas with a marked stick and doesn't seem like im loosing any gas when it's parked.

I guess the next thing is to change the oil and filter......might as well do the coolant too since I'm under there, and see what happens.

The tractor wasn't having issues until it was parked by the road for my labor day display. I'm pretty sure I had about a gallon of gas in it, and that night was when I couldn't fire it up and it was back firing. I'm 90% certain I had the gas off, but where did it go then? And after getting ran over maybe my memory isn't all there. The gauge not reading, the faint smell, the off running. Could be all signs of tainted oil I guess........I just hope I didn't do any damage or it's time for me to get rid of the tractor before I even have fun with it......

I have the gas shut off and the carb pit cock open with cardboard under it. I'm going to see if any gas leaks out. Tomorrow if I have time it'll be oil and filter time change.

I got antsy and drained the oil tonight. Now that I got it in a pan and bucket. The gas smell definitely got stronger. The oil didn't look terrible but feeling it and watching it drain in full stream you could it wasn't normal. The oil pain was full and about 2 gallons in a 5 gallon bucket so something extra in there. I'm going to dip a stick in the oil and see how well it burns.....read if there gas in it it'll ignite pretty fast........I'll do that after I clean up my oily hands......

Could be from a plug firing intermittently, or on and off if your carb is good and tight. My 322 was only firing on 2 of 3 until I fixed...gassy oil led me to pickup coils behind flywheel...all good now. You'll sort it out...tractor time!

Thanks. I've read about forgetting to turn off the gas, a stuck float, or bad needles. I have the gas off and carb pitcock open and so far nothing on the cardboard. This started happening the night I put away my labor day display. I'm pretty certain I turned off the fuel and never really have more than a gallon in it, but it was bone dry trying to fire it up. I do remember though I didn't starve it before shutting it off. What got me thinking though is twice in a month the tank was empty with the gas off and pitcock opened. So possibly carb got bumped or fiddle with and is running rich. Again I guess check the simple things first. I could've just forgot to turn off the gas one time.......
Put fresh oil and filter in. Tractor fired up and idled really nice. No pressure reading off the new gauge. I contacted the seller and they'll either refund me for the gauge or send a new one. I might just return them all and get something from a legit place.........would've been the smart choice right away.
Dealing with the seller is like pulling teeth. I'm not sure how they have a 100% satisfaction rating. They messaged me back right away the same afternoon I messaged them, and now 3 days later nothing. Luckily after 3 days you can report them and that usually fixes the problem I discovered from other bad online buying experiences. So we'll see what happens. I just want to get the tractor up and running great again and don't want to be dinking around.

Does anyone have experience with the Country Line universal gauges sold at farm stores? I've read mixed reviews on them, and read unless you have true brand gauges you won't have an accurate reading. Just wondering how true that is.
There is only one sure source for accurate gauges, EverGreen Restoration (evergreen gauges.com) period. If his gauges do not work he will make it right (Jerry Trcka). I have not personally purchased gauges from him (or maybe I have) but I have talked with him in person and looked at his work, he builds them, he is not reselling someone else's product. Sure he sources the components like glass faces and uses Jorde Decals but ask your seller if they actually build their product.

Come to think about it I have bought gauges from EverGreen Restoration, just have not used them yet. Believe it or not I have parts purchased fifteen years ago for a restoration that I am just now getting around to doing. I have a John Deere 50 I am working on now as it too developed issues while waiting its turn so to speak. I intend to get it running as well as possible, that is restoration to me as I stop at painting now. That is a whole other story.

Every fourm I go to about gauges everyone mentions him and says the samething......if it's not reading you got other issues. I've looked at an pressure gauge and it's $65.00. You can look at it 2 ways. Yeah might be a bit high to some but you got the qauilty there and in reality it actually isn't a bad price. I spent half of that on junk gauges already and will be ripping the tractor appart again, so might as well do it right.

I've been in contact with the ebay seller. He wants me to pay 2.00 to send a replacement gauge, or he'll reimburse me 6.00 on the bad one. He claims he can't print a return label but ebay says if I pay for shipping he will have to reimburse me. The guy is more so a " warehouse" aka basement or garage storage for the company that makes these gauges. I sent him pictures of the mechanic gauge reading and he had a ton of excuses that, that gauge is too big, and it's off. I also sent him 4 different screen shots of people on other fourms having 0 or off readings with the same gauges which he didn't like. He claims the gauges are tested for 40 psi, which explains possible off rates, but if I got some sort of reading on a 100 psi gauge I'd still have something. I'm just going back in fourth with him yet and just became a blame or bickering war. I don't think I'll be getting my $29.09 back or all the hassel it's worth to try dealing to get it back.......leason learned but I got plenty of time to go back in fourth with him in my day...........the prince of Egypt is keeping me busy with his 1.2 million offer too.

I'll probably check out evergreen gauges or steiner tractor parts and get something I should've bought.

In a different note looking on Steiner's page at gauges I saw they announced the the 2023 winners.......I wasn't one of them but did have to question some of the winners.......
I feel your frustration, don't let it get to ya, believe me that's part of collecting old tractors. Currently I am working on my 50 that started running rough. When I opened its oil bath air cleaner it had several mice in various stages of decomposition in the cup. Usually I just find nuts and once had one pretty much filled with shelled corn. Now I am waiting on the carb to come back and the cylinder head to get done. Hopefully it will run great once all that is done otherwise I will have spent a lot of money and not resolved the problem, believe me I have been there before.
Today is the 1 year anniversary of my accident.
Happy anniversary Tony! Progress is good, albeit small at times. Cars used to have Oil Pressure gauges, then the car companies figured out that people fretted over them too much so you don't find them anymore.
