Oil Pressure Thread.

I figured I'd document my progress on this project incase anyone ever runs into the same issue. Seems like all at once I'm having issues with my 1952 B. 1st the electrical which was a bad battery post, and cables but still has a lag in starting up.

Since I bought the tractor only the amp gauge worked. There's coolant in the radiator, and the oil drips out when you open up the bolt on the crank case. No smoke, odd noise or roughness in running has ever happened playing with the tractor and the past owner seemed pretty honest , legit and knew what he was doing for maintenance on this tractor. Planning on using the tractor more I wanted to make sure everything was up to par. I replaced all my gauges....

Unfortunately that didn't help with oil pressure issue. I did a ton of research and read a lot of similar stories and replies.......even from others on this site to check the lines and pump. I'll open up the crank case........which I just resealed after discovering it was pinching my light wires. Hopefully I can shimmy my hands in there and not have to drop the pump. I've read it can be a clogged screen or line, sheared sqaure head, unhooked line, or bad pump. Figures crossed just a loose line. It leaks around the bottom cover so I wonder if this was open up before. I'll post more of my progress.

I feel your frustration, don't let it get to ya, believe me that's part of collecting old tractors. Currently I am working on my 50 that started running rough. When I opened its oil bath air cleaner it had several mice in various stages of decomposition in the cup. Usually I just find nuts and once had one pretty much filled with shelled corn. Now I am waiting on the carb to come back and the cylinder head to get done. Hopefully it will run great once all that is done otherwise I will have spent a lot of money and not resolved the problem, believe me I have been there before.
Yup all part of the hobby. I've been learning more than ever on this tractor and it was running fine not too long ago so figure it can't be anything too serious.
Happy anniversary Tony! Progress is good, albeit small at times. Cars used to have Oil Pressure gauges, then the car companies figured out that people fretted over them too much so you don't find them anymore.
Thanks. Yup not quite the old me anymore but that's not saying I can't be a new me with some limitations. As much as I get mad about the kid and the family, or my boss switching me onto trees I need to remember how far I've come from not being able to eat or get out of bed for 4 days to grinding my teeth trying to get back into this hobby. Even with a few set backs still moving forward. End of this month I have a follow up on the left better knee to determine more pt or not and I need an exam on the right hardware one for possible legitimate damage. If I need another surgery on that one.....well hey it's going to be winter soon.

You're on the right track, with your B and recovery...just keep your mind moving forward/occupied while your body mends. You know where you are...don't look back unless you need a clue on where to go from here. The future lies ahead...keep your mind trained on that and it will all fall in place in due time.

I'll put in a plug for Evergreen Gages too. Our B needed all new gages too, and this company was the only one recommended. Glad I followed the advice given 10-12 years ago. They work!
Another tip for the two cylinder letter tractors. When left sitting for a while, put a sock over the air stack to keep mud dobbers from building nests inside. We took off the assembly and pressure washed the tar out of it. Got gobs of mud out of there, figured it to be clean. The stack was so rusted, we cut it off to replace it. Once we could see inside there was still a lot left in there behind the baffle where the water couldn't reach.
On the health issues, just keep focusing on the vast improvements over the time. It can't be easy, but as long as you have a will to do things, even at a slower pace, keep that good attitude going. Having a tractor hobby to keep your mind in the zone, is a good thing. Always gonna be something wrong with them, usually just minor stuff, but keeps the learning process going. As Red Green would say, "hang in there, we're all pullin' for ya".

Thanks. I've read about a sock, or milk sock. My 2nd thought after I came to my senses was after wiggling my fingures and toes was " well I can still move apparently " yup good days and bad but getting back to wrenching on stuff even if it's a struggle its still something I can still do. You see people in wheelchairs or missing both arms out doing fully capable people so I don't have anything to really complain about. Thank you(all) for the encouragement.

Tony - I have a cute story to share that is similar to what you just said. Lisa (SIL) was a nurse, witnessed and accident where a motorcycle went off the road and collided with a solid object. She immediately went to assist the poor lad, the first thing he said was "how's my bike?" Lisa said "Not as bad as you". Hang in there lad, you'll have stories to tell down the road. Tom

Lol. Sounds like something I'd say.

So far my top stories are:

I was a wake during the whole thing and while getting dragged to what could've been my death I was mad I could feel my brand new carhartt jeans getting burned, ripped, and torn up( glad I didn't have on my battered jeans and cowboy boots on like I usually do.....probably would've had more road rash)

After I shook myself off and realized what I thought was " okay" I was pushing myself up( until some neighbors stopped me) and said " alright Eli(my foreman) let's get the skid unloaded."

While the neighbors brought me pillows and blankets to comfort me in the middle of the street I asked one if she could climb in the dump truck and grab my energy drink she replied "no, you're going to be needing emergency surgery you can't be drinking anything" in my head I called her some nasty things.......

While I was getting carted into the ambulance a fire fighter rested my ball cap on my chest that was found about 30 ft from where I was standing . He said " here bud you probably have bigger concerns but thought you might want this" I thanked him and asked if he saw my sunglasses, he laughed and said " I doubt they survived like you".

At the trauma center unfortunately I needed 2 enemas to get everything flowing again. The nurse asked if the 2nd one was as bad as the 1st. I replied " I'd rather get ran over again" the look on her face was priceless.

After about 2 months of being home I tried to dress normal for Thanksgiving. I put on a pair of jeans, slid my belt through them and it didn't fit......I thought wth I didn't gain that much weight not working.......the medics cut my belt to get what was left of my jeans off I discovered.

A bit of an update. With the new battery, new cables, new spark plugs, fresh oil, and filter, blowing out the carb and trying a different starting procedure ( more throttle, leaving the choke on for 5 seconds, then idling the throttle down ) the b fires up and sounds pretty normal. Even though I know I have oil pressure from the mechanic's gauge, and oil going up the line, I'm hesitant of running it too long or moving it to see how it operates.

I had almost 3 gallons of a gas oil mix when I drained the oil. When I took the carb off to blow it out the fuel shut off did work, so I'm assuming and hoping I just forgot to turn the gas off and would explain the empty tank when I tried to fire it up. After letting it idle for a minute or 2 I checked the oil and it looked like a normal color and was tacky.

I've been having fuel issues with my efi atv......just dogging around. I remembered last time I filled up my 3 gas jugs( usually only sit for 2 weeks) it was at a different place than I usually go. It was still non ethonal gas but find it interesting that the atv and b were acting up with that gas......again I'm sure the gas oil mix didn't help.

Everyday I've been on the ebay seller of the gauge. He doesn't seem happy I'm on him every day, that I had a mechanics gauge, and knew my stuff. He just wanted to refund me 6.00 out of the 28.00 for the bad gauge, or have me pay 2.00 to ship a new one. As of right now he said they're specially testing one for me and will send me some pictures. He asked me what the ranges had to be which didn't give me much faith. The john deere gauges are 25psi max and I was getting about 15psi with the mechanics gauge. Doing more research on gauges I discovered even Stiener Tractor gauges come from India. I'll see what happens but if this new gauge doesn't work I'll contact ever green. I was hoping to do some fall plowing this weekend but we'll see.

I've been in contact with the ebay seller. He wants me to pay 2.00 to send a replacement gauge, or he'll reimburse me 6.00 on the bad one. He claims he can't print a return label but ebay says if I pay for shipping he will have to reimburse me. The guy is more so a " warehouse" aka basement or garage storage for the company that makes these gauges. I sent him pictures of the mechanic gauge reading and he had a ton of excuses that, that gauge is too big, and it's off. I also sent him 4 different screen shots of people on other fourms having 0 or off readings with the same gauges which he didn't like. He claims the gauges are tested for 40 psi, which explains possible off rates, but if I got some sort of reading on a 100 psi gauge I'd still have something. I'm just going back in fourth with him yet and just became a blame or bickering war. I don't think I'll be getting my $29.09 back or all the hassel it's worth to try dealing to get it back.......leason learned but I got plenty of time to go back in fourth with him in my day...........the prince of Egypt is keeping me busy with his 1.2 million offer too.

I'll probably check out evergreen gauges or steiner tractor parts and get something I should've bought.
usually an eBay seller will do anything to avoid negative feedback. I know I would!

I figured I have the time to go back in fourth with him......cheap entertainment. He has 100% customer satisfaction rating......not saying they are all accurate or real. If I can get a new, accurate reading, working gauge at $0.00 shipped to me. I'll be 100% happy too......just took 2 weeks and lots of bickering to get there.
Cheap entertainment!👍🏻🤣🤣 Great way to look at it 😎
Another update. I don't buy much on ebay, but have had decent luck with it the couple things I've bought. Reading simular situations like I'm experiencing me being a " jerk" or " my way or no way" is actually being smart. The seller was going to refund me 6.00 for the gauge the whole set was 30.00. I said no. They were going to send me a replacement if I sent 2.00 for shipping I said no. They were trying to convice me that they couldn't send a return lable to return the set and I'd have to pay shipping......WI to India........I said no and on their page it says free shipping and returns. I filed a returned claim which they didn't like and said they're calibrating a new gauge for me with in my spec requirements and will send pictures. They asked me to cancel the request I said not until I get the new gauge and it works. They didn't like that either.......after reading other stories once you cancel a return request it's done, you can't go back and ebay can't step in. Now they messaged me saying the gauge is calibrated and waiting for my payment of 2.00. No picture of the gauge and I responded back saying I'm not paying to replace a faulty one and if they feel differently I'll have ebay step in or return everything.

I'm not sure what will happen next. I'm hoping it just gets sent to me for nothing and they block me from buying from them again......or I'll be getting a box that sounds like a clock, Or if I need ebay to step in. I'm glad I'm staying on top of it and doing the things that make sense to cover me. In reality whatever happens and if I'm out almost 30.00 leason learned to buy local and you get what you pay for.

I didn't look close to see where they came from, but was watching you tube channels guys were saying their steiner gauges came from India. The company has 100% satisfaction for their ebay store, but after reading on other fourms seems like guys have similar issues of off readings or none at all. It's unfortunate cause these gauges look sharp. Not sure how accurate the 2 other gauges are but I did find a white face oil pressure gauge at napa that'd fit and look well.
Another up date. No word from the ebay seller today but I went to napa for their gauge. Its a pretty close match to the others. A bit more of a creamish face and doesn't say JD. Looking on the package its " made in India ":cautious:. I decided have an r n r day and focused a lot of time towards the dog today and took her for a long walk and ride. So I didn't have much time to work on the B before having to pick my son up from school. I hooked the new gauge to my air compresser and regulated it to 40 psi, and the new gauge was almost spot on. I hooked up the ebay gauge to the compressor and it didn't hardly move off the stop mark......the seller told me the gauge is 40 psi max......Then I tried it again and this time it moved at 20......but true John Deere gauges are 25 max psi so I should've been on the high side. Either way with the 2 different readings something is off. Unfortunately I dropped the gauge and it cracked so itll be hard to throw the pictures at the ebay seller now " you cracked the gauge that's why it has off readings and you want a new one"

I discovered I needed a double male connector for the new napa gauge to the elbow and was able to get that in town, get everything hooked up to and had just enough time to bump the starter and I was getting 11 to 12 psi. Unfortunately I pulled out 2 ignation wires when I pulled the dash away so didn't have time to hook those up yet......or figure out where they go....to have the tractor fire up and actually run, but it's a start so far. Fingers crossed this will the be the end of oil pressure issue and other issues I was having since September.

Another update from the update. I got the wires figured out, got the b fired up and the new gauge reads!

Unless you really know, you can't tell a difference in the gauges.......sorry but now that you guys know, none of you can come over.

Idle at 15psi.

Thank you for all the help everyone. I still need to bolt the dash back together.

Unfortunately when I accidentally pulled out the wires. Only the charge side of the amp meter works. If the ignation is off and I turn on thr lights it doesn't move to the left. There is a possibility one of those wires got loose too. I'll have to see.

Now I'm eager, but a bit nervous to do some plowing tomorrow.

Good progress nonetheless...looks good. Dog time is the best...have to calibrate the Lab now & then.

Yup figured these past 2 years she's been spoiled between my wife and son home during covid and me recovering from the accident and now possibly going back to work next week on restrictions so figured better give her extra lovin.

Upate to the updated update: I got the ammeter figured out. I hooked up the light switch in the wrong area. The B hasn't left the shop since labor day weekend. As of tonight it fired up and took it for a couple laps around the driveway. Seems to be up to par. It felt great to finally enjoy it again. Thank you so much for your help. I learned A TON! Tomorrow I'm going to either going to try to rake some hay with it, or play with tye plow. I'm not sure how to handle the ebay situation now that I got a true working gauge. Probably just leave a negative review and move on. I think I gave the guy enough head aches, and a bad review will do more good for me and damage to him than a another gauge on the shelf.

Update. I contacted ebay they were very helpful. As mentioned before I'm glad I stuck to it and didn't give in or fall for any of the guys schemes. A 6.00 offer was his way to try to get rid of me or the problem. He was also supposed to provide a return label if advertising free returns. I said I just want the new calibrated gauge. Since I have everything installed and the other matching gauge. He got a warning and has until the 10th to get me the new gauge. I know 1 bad seller doesn't represent ebay but I would've been better off buying from a true store. Leason learned.
