A few weeks ago, I used JD Parts to set up a parts order, which included oil filters for my 318. JD Parts now lists the AM101207 filter as NLA, and substitutes AM125424.
WRONG! The AM125424 is a much shorter filter, and doesn't come out as far as the shroud. It does have the same mount dimensions on the flange, so will install and function on the engine. But it leaves a huge hole in the shroud for cooling air to blow out of---not good.
Some quick checking says that both filters are more-or-less generic industry standards. The AM101207 is commonly called the "Tall Kohler" filter Kohler 52-050-02. The AM125454 is commonly called the "Short Kohler," Kohler number 12-050-01.
Checking dimensions, the tall Kohler is 3-1/2 inches high, and the short Kohler is 2-1/4 inches high. It looks as though the tall Kohler has a finer filter mesh, 27 microns vs. 35.
Basically, it looks to me as though the filters are mechanically interchangeable, and for any engine that will take the tall filter, that's the one to get and use.
