A few weeks ago, I used JD Parts to set up a parts order, which included oil filters for my 318. JD Parts now lists the AM101207 filter as NLA, and substitutes AM125424.

WRONG! The AM125424 is a much shorter filter, and doesn't come out as far as the shroud. It does have the same mount dimensions on the flange, so will install and function on the engine. But it leaves a huge hole in the shroud for cooling air to blow out of---not good.

Some quick checking says that both filters are more-or-less generic industry standards. The AM101207 is commonly called the "Tall Kohler" filter Kohler 52-050-02. The AM125454 is commonly called the "Short Kohler," Kohler number 12-050-01.

Checking dimensions, the tall Kohler is 3-1/2 inches high, and the short Kohler is 2-1/4 inches high. It looks as though the tall Kohler has a finer filter mesh, 27 microns vs. 35.

Basically, it looks to me as though the filters are mechanically interchangeable, and for any engine that will take the tall filter, that's the one to get and use.

Hank, I was similarly disappointed this spring to get a short filter. I wondered if that might actually help get more air across the head on that side, especially if you add a cover over it? I was hoping at least.

I found an oil filter cross reference site, and this is the list they had for the tall am101207 filter, and I checked it against fram's cross reference.

here is the generic website's list:

DANG. That's bad news because I just started using the JD filter about 2 yrs ago because the OEM ONAN filter was over $22 each last time I bought one. JD filter was/is around $7.50.

I got one JD filter left, have to start shopping for the Fleetguard.

I wouldn't be as concerned about cooling air flow difference between the long & short filter as I would the difference in the amount and mesh size of the filter media. 27 vs 35 microns. You can always duct tape up the filter hole. I know there's a longer filter that's really high volume, meaning cheaper, but I suspect that makes the side cover impossible to install.

The Purolator L10241 filter for the Onan is available at Walmart for $ 3.27, It is a larger filter and still allows the 318 side covers to fit, it is also interchangeable with a Scag , Kawasaki engine mower as my son just swiped my last filter to put on his,

Interesting to see the comment that JD has reinstated the AM101207 tall filter.

I used the JD Parts website to put together an online parts order which included these filters, and got an automatic change to the short filter number. However, double checking, that was back in June.

So far as actually substituting the short filter for the long one goes, I don't see any good reason to do so. For one thing, if you don't have the cap wrench for the filters, you'd have to open up the tin to R&R the filter. Plus, from the specs I found, the tall filter not only has more capacity, but has finer filtration. And whether there is more air over the right cylinder head with the short filter, that would depend on how one chose to block off the air flow out the hole in the shroud.

My engines will get the tall filters, whether I can get them from Deere, or whether I have to go aftermarket. As several people have noted, this filters cross to many other part numbers beyond the Kohler numbers I gave. While I didn't research the question, I'll guess that the basic design had an automobile application, and that both Kohler and Onan picked them as a generic high-volume design already in production.

I ran into the same problem. A shorter Kohler was substituted for the AM101207 (3 1/2"). Onan indicates the Onan 122-0800 (4 1/4") for the B43G engine. Would this be a better filter for our 318's with a B43G engine than the AM101207? Thanks

I forgot to add in my last thread, Dennis said he had to pay $22.00 2 years ago for this Onan filter. I am seeing the 122-0800 listed now for $10.00 - 11.00 which is not much more than the AM101207 at the JD dealer. But if it's better? Gerry

GERALD - My One dealer HATES Onan. That price was for a 122-0645 genuine Onan oil filter. Normally the parts guy laughs when I ask for an Onan part. Kohler isn't a problem, just Onan.

Yes, you can buy them on-line for less, but unless you get free shipping, that ends up being more expensive.

There is a taller filter than the Onan 122-0645 and JD AM101207 for the Onan, must be 5-1/2 to 6 inches tall that's even cheaper, but like I said, my side panel won't fit on the right side with that filter.

In my opinion, more filtering paper with finer mesh is better than less paper with bigger mesh. You need the least amount of pressure drop across the filter with the maximum flow of clean oil to your engine's moving parts.

Reading through some of this, I'll add a few comments. What's on my 318's Onan is an AM101207. The local dealer had 5 in stock at $8.50 per, so I just bought their stock.

I looked at my (post-1992) LT133, which has a Kohler CV-13 engine. What is on it is the Kohler version, 52-050-02. Deere's parts list specifies the short filter, but I've bought filters for that engine from the local saw shop, who handle Husqvarna and Toro tractors. This is a mom-pop-son operation, and the son does steady business with garden and lawn equipment in general, not just what they sell. The taller filters fit just fine on that engine. Can't recall, but they may charge a bit more than the JD dealer, but not much.

I'd consider anything bigger than the "tall Kohler" AM101207/52-050-02 to be total overkill.
I haven't researched it, but I suspect that Kohler and Onan selected an automotive filter available off-the-shelf and used on much larger automobile engines. Crankcase capacity (less filter) on both small engines is around 1-1/2 quarts, while filters the same size are used on 5-quart automobile V-8 engines. My tractors run in dusty severe service conditions, so I change oil and clean air filters every 25 hours, and filters every 50.

Appreciate your feedback. I am also using the AM101207 at about $8.50 and have a couple set aside. Just happened to go to Onan's Parts web site and found listed the 122-0645 and the 122-0800 and aroused some curiosity. Gerry

Hello Hank
I try to Buy Purolater Gold Oil filter's if I can find them to fit my engine's due to me Running synthetic engine Oil, they claim to filter our 99.9% of containment's But In the Case of my P-218 Onan engine Purolater does Not make a Gold Oil filter for it so I chose WIX Brand filter's Instead. I am confident that the Wix filter's Exceed most other Engine Oil filter's currently out there, as far as Trapping the containment's well. Here is the WIX Filter Number's that fit the Onan engine as well as the Hydrostatic Transmission of the Tractor and the other filter's Needed to keep our John Deere's Running strong. I hope this help's, Kurt

Air Filter 46094 318 w / Onan B43G Engine
Fuel Filter 33011 318 w / Onan B43G Engine
Oil Filter 5134853 318 w / Onan B43G Engine
Transmission Filter 51410 318 w / Onan B43G Engine
