I was at a machine shop the other day getting my hh100 rebuilt and there was a good looking onan p series of some sort there that had the right side head off and they were rebuilding the intake valve seat. I asked what was going on and he said that they are prone to dropping the intake valve seat if the gasket is not around the oil filter has anyone else heard of that?

Don't know , but always heard it was the intakes going out . Maybe the heat expands the exhaust seat enough to keep it inserted in the aluminum , whereas the intake runs cooler and allows the intake metal seat to contract and loosen up . Wish I knew exactly why they do it ; but as for now , the loss of air flow around the oil filter seems relatively plausible , until one can give a more educated explanation .

Boomer ? Boomer ???

Thanks Dave.
OK. What do Boomer, OnanParts., & all other Onan gurus think? Dave has posted reference to that oil filter grommet/seal as being important at least 2X now. That piece does show on PC 1924 -- B15 \ 22-11, part no. 122-0502 (Grommet). Bobo

I have seen a few loose valve seats, all intake valve. I don't know about the air loss around the oil filter, but I know most of the ones I've seen had leaky valve box cover gaskets. The fins were all gunked up allowing little air flow to the valve seat area. The intake valve is farther away from the flywheel.
I don't know if there is any left/right pattern.

i,m late to the party today.
the P series had a BIG problem with intake valve
seats, mainly 1989 to 1992.
they were all intake seats, about 50% for each cylinder.
i have 22 P 220 warranty engines on site, all with the bad seats, some with only 150 hrs.
they have the wrong crank for j.d.
i have NEVER seen a j,d. engine come in the door
with that air seal installed.
i have never had a problem with them coming off.
my 1982 B 48M still has the original one.
thank you. boomer

I put a brand new seal on my p220 . Didn't think much about it till I went to change the oil , and noticed it was gone . I know I installed it correctly , but didn't glue it around the sheet metal . Next one I a darn sure will put some 3-M weather-strip adhesive on it . They do blow a lot of un-used air out the gap when missing .

Hello Guy's
I am confused here of what this gasket is ? Please excuse my Ignorance of this part but I am not sure what it is would someone care to explain it ? I can tell you that by Placing the fire wall insulation that Forum Member John Lang offer's and makes up for these Onan engine's it make's a HUGE difference in the forward air flow Force of these engines. I would Guestimate that with it in Place it increases the forward air flow as much as 50% or More. Back when my 318 was missing it's fire wall insulation you could hardly Notice any forward air flow at an Idle as well as W.O.T. Now that I have it in Place it feel's Like a Tornado coming out of my Grill area, so it has to make the Long term running duration of these Onan's much Better. I also Placed some of the ribbed seat welting on the rear area where my Hood comes down to meet the dash panel, Going around the dash Panel surround and it seem's to pad that area nicely as well as Provide a nice Tight seal back there. Regards, Kurt

Kurt, If you go to OnanParts you can look up the oil filter gasket, or seal. It is round with a large lip going oround the outside of it.
It fits tightly onto the end of the oil filter that sticks out of the engine shroud and as I now know seals the gap for proper air flow.

Boomer, yes it is. I had just placed it there before I took picture. I figured the picture might help some members see what was being talked about. I knew someone would comment about the orientation of the seal.

Gene,

B-series engines with replacement valve guides can use a seal, but it is a different part number than the P-series seal. If there is no step in the top of our guide, even the B-series part may not fit... Here is a thread with the part numbers.
(the WFM search engine is your friend...)

Sorry, the seal discussed here is for the filter and not the valve stems -- blame my meds as I am recuperating from a surgery...
