I just got my first JD, a 318. The pedal is missing something, though. When I press on it, it does not return to the home position but remains applied. I can't accelerate unless I hook my toe under the pedal and pull it up. I'm looking for a reference or a how-to to find out how it should work and how i can best repair it. Any thoughts/comments greatly appreciated.

Michael-
You probably have a broken, missing or unhooked brake spring. Follow the linkage from the pedal to the brake. There is a spring where the linkage hooks to the brake.

Just spent a couple of days and a can of WD40 working my (left foot as your sitting on the tractor) brake bushing or hinge point as Kurt put it. My shaft was froze to the bushing no movement. Mine is a 316 brake system not the same as a 318 but the bushing could be.

Hello Scott
Glad it was Just a slight corrosion issue. I encountered the very same issue when i built my son in law's 1991 John Deere 316. His was froze up as well and would not return. While I had the floor pan off I hit every hinge point I could see for the brake linkage. With in a day or so the penetrating oil did it's job and it work's as it should now. Regards, kurt
