Greg, I see two things that would casue your heat problem. One is you don't have a heat deflector over your muffler. The other is you don't seem to have insulation on your firewall behind the engine. That causes the engine to draw heat from the muffler back over the engine and thru the engine again. Take a look at my 27 HP jd 420 powered by Kohler CH740 in my profile.

If this is strictly a pulling tractor that stuff really wont matter much.

Most of the pulling guys run flywheels without fans, heads with no fins and some even solid blocks. Only has to run for 30 seconds at a time.

Sorry, I saw the thread dropping down the list with no responses, so I thought no one had any more interest in it.
Neil, I see you had your wiring issues resolved and I can't add anything to it.
JRL - your setup looks really good on your 420. I don't have a thick heat barrier on the firewall but I am using a thin barrier which works quite well. You can see the silver side toward the engine in earlier photos. I like the deflector idea, although I may not need it now. I've been running the engine and no longer have the heat problem.
