I'm doing a partial restoration on my 82 JD 317 and I'm wanting to re-paint the panels for the instrument panel. Below the steering column is the product ID number/serial number location.

This is a sticker not a metal ID plate, can a new sticker or preferably a metal ID/serial plate be obtained, or will I just have to tape this sticker up.

Tony,

There at least two past posts on this subject (and maybe others as well) The ones I am aware of are:

http://www.wfmachines.com/discus/messages/335/90560.html

I recently made a custom foil tag replacement for an 80 cart that I am working on. It can be pinned, riveted or screwed on. Tags can be made in aluminum, brass, or stainless and are .020 thick. This being the first time I did this, I wanted to see what a brass and stainless tag would look like. Here are the first tags I made.

I liked the results of this so well, I will be doing more for some of my tractors and other attachments. The tags I do in the future will reproduce the OEM look as close as possible.

Just out of curiosity. Does your tag on the 317 look like this (with the exception of the 318 being 317), or is it completely different?

I am curious if there is a interest from other members here for reproduction tags. This would help to offset the cost, based on the design.

Tim your reproduction label looks really good! How did you make them computer special printer? I need some like that for my Kohler engine on my 300

Michael, Thank you. This is a permanent photo metal etching process, but it also could be done by laser. The artwork is computer generated, but the etching process is not. Did you check with Kohler? Some of these tags they can still get for you.

Yes! Tim my tag looks almost the same. I was at my local JD dealership just today and ask the question about a re-production ID tag since I was going to re-paint the instrument panel console.

Of course as I expected I got the oh no way could we issue such a thing. I said so that would be like removing a vin # from a vehicle and asking for a new one.

Although I believe the parts guy I talked to did say it could probably be done but you would probably have to do some research locating original owner if need to be, then yada, yada, yada paper work and so on, kinda like more dang trouble than it's worth.

I ended up removing mine very carefully with the help of a heat gun and transferring it onto a wax paper type surface with hopefully gluing it back on someway.

Although I would be very interested myself in the re-productions you are showing in the above pics. A stainless one probably for me. Nice job.

Thank you for your positive feedback. Sounds as though there is interest in a product like this, and that is what I was looking and asking for.

BUT …

I do need to make it clear nothing will be manufactured, sold, or prices even discussed at this point (plus, this is not the forum for this).

This is only an example of what I have done for my personnel equipment; in response to a question can something like this be obtained.

As Tony was told from his Deere dealer, there is a valid concern with retagging a piece of equipment (but this is not as bad as a Titled Vehicle). Without going into details, I need to address any potential legal issues before I feel comfortable doing anything like this for others. Indisputable Proof of Ownership and conformation of the PIN or Serial Number(s) being reproduced is obviously is a must have that I will require.

I am curious what other members have learned, encountered and ultimately willing to share in having other reproduction items made which are NLA from Deere (i.e. decals, service manual reprints, etc…).

Is there a legal contact (email me) at Deere anyone has worked with in order to obtain permission for reproduction items?

Hi Tim. You might contact Bradon P. at the HAPCO link above. He is licensed with JD for the reproduction decals he makes and can tell you what it takes to be "legit" with JD. I do believe it isn't easy or cheap, but he can tell you more than I can, since he has been through all the hoops.
