I have a 1988 JD318 and having PTO problems. It will shut its self off while mowing. All of the safety switches seam to be working. If I am sitting on the seat with the PTO engaged and lift myself off the seat the motor will die. I have adjusted the air gap on it over a dozen times and it still quits. So any ideas on what I need to check to gets this corrected? Thanks for any ideas...........Gary

Is the air gap going way out of spec? If so replace the lock nuts. From there possibly the coil, circuit breaker, short in the wires going to the PTO, or the switch itself. I'd look for shorts, and test the PTO resistance to start.

"All of the safety switches seem to be working. -- If I am sitting on the seat with the PTO engaged and lift myself off the seat the motor will die". Well, isn't that normal - the way the system is supposed to be\work? Confused here. Bobo

That is what I was trying to get across Bobo. But the PTO shuts off like I am not on the seat and the tractor tries to dye if I don't turn the PTO off and I can turn it back on it will work for a while until it does the same thing again.

One of two things will cause you problem , and they are both related to the seat switch , or wiring to it being intermittent . Normally , if you break continuity of seat switch *only momentarily* , it will let the tractor run , but will turn off the pto until you cycle the switch (off , then back on) . You go on your merry way . But when it sees a longer seat switch continuity break , and the tractor not being in neutral , it should turn the motor off also .

I think you have an intermittent seat switch or bad connection at the connector . Also , you need to check the wiring to the seat switch for frame contact breach through the insulation .

Thanks David for the idea on where to look. I took the connection off the seat switch and clean the connection and put some grease on the connection. Then I went out and picked up some leaves with the mc-519 cart. It worked as it should. So hopefully that will take care of my problem..........Thanks again for the help...Gary
