I am in the process of cleaning up the gearbox and putting in fresh lubricant (corn head grease) and wanted to remove the gearbox from the snow thrower support. To do so, I need to remove the 7" V-belt pulley on the gearbox so I can get it through the hole in the support. Naturally the pulley is frozen on. I have a 3 arm puller but I am sure it would just bend the pulley. I saw some posts where they tack welded a rod on the hub of the pulley but I do not have a welder so I need another way. I have the cover off the gearbox and was wondering if I pull the slip ring off the gear can I pull the shaft with the pulley on out or is that a pressed on gear?

The gear is supposed to slide off the shaft. If the gear had been pressed on, it would be impossible to get it into the housing. There is a chance of a slight ridge on the beside the snap ring, just from wear.

For mine once the C clip removed I was able to pull the gear by hand.
The woodruff key must be remove then I had no problem to push the shaft out.
One problem, the groove for the C clip is very sharp and can destroy the oil seal lip.

I had trouble getting my pulley off as well. I ended up using a couple pieces of angle iron and some 1/4 inch flat on the back side. Then 1/4 inch bolts through the holes in the pulley to the front side. Then a gear puller set, like a steering wheel puller on the front side. With this cluster$ I was able to put pressure on the back side of the hub, rather than on the outer pulley. Also, it may have red locktite in there, which you may then have to heat it some to break it loose.

Thanks to all!
Dennis - tightening the set screws with penetrating oil in the hole worked really good.
Andre - Thanks for pointing out the potential of cutting the seal on the groove for the C clip if I tried pulling the entire shaft out.
Wayne - I was able to modify your plan slightly. I used a large Bearing separator on the back side, then a steering wheel puller and C-Clamps. Worked like a charm. It really gave a loud pop when it broke loose. Got the gearbox off and everything looks good inside. So a little more cleanup and then fresh lubricant and we will be back in business.
