I've had this "70 for a little while... Just got a VH60 I've had around in it that had a dead coil, replaced that and it runs and idles OK, just wont throttle up.
Since I've had this engine over the past 5 yrs I've put a updated governor in it and a service carb a few years back.
I then got mad at it and put it away for a year or two after the coil died.
The main jet/ needle is clean, and I'm getting good fuel supply. Why wont it run well past 1/4 throttle??
Governor is adjusted right..

Does it miss or just die when you attempt to throttle up the engine? I have a John Deere 60 with the same engine. I had the same problem but opposite. My new John Deere 56 has the aluminum block version.

It seems to miss, like it's firing every other time...
I can open the main jet until the exhaust turns black (from being too rich), but there doesn't seem a point where it clears up.

I am thinking it is Spark related. How does the plug look?

Sometimes a failing condenser will allow idle but not higher speed running...try replacing the condenser with a new one. Don't know if you have these two Tecumseh documents below, but you might find them useful...it is all pretty generic.

Have you timed the points? Agreed seems spark related
