Hello Everyone,

Good news/Bad news

Good news, I didn't blow up the Yanmar.

Bad news, I don't know what's wrong with it.

I was mowing the other day and the engine stumbled and then just stopped. I saw a little puff of white smoke come out of the front of the tractor. When it wouldn't start I thought for sure I locked the diesel up. I had just did a oil change, and expected to find a puddle in the tractor shed where the old girl was parked. Luckily it wasn't that. Disaster avoided. BTW... reason it wouldn't start again, was I forgot to turn the PTO switch off for the mower.

Anyways...

long story, longer...

The tractor starts, runs and sounds really strong. But when I start the PTO it immediately shuts the engine off. Stops it cold in its tracks.

I was thinking the front PTO/Clutch? I was reading on here, before I re-registered (it's been a few years, I guess they deleted my account), and it seems like it could be an electrical issue. Perhaps one of the safety features?

Any suggestions on where to start troubleshooting?

Thanks in advance.

The 330 does not have an electrical shut down. It uses a mechanical lever to close the throttle for shut down. The only thing the safety switches do is to inhibit the starter and PTO engagement.

So I would suspect the PTO clutch is locking up the engine. Check to see if there is anything binding up when the clutch is engaged.

Do you have to remove the PTO clutch to check? Or can you check it one the tractor?

I read (I think) something in the manual about the PTO switch running to the lower pressure sensor that shuts down the engine. Is that true?

Thanks guys.

own out the clutch windings

remove the PTO belt and see if any pulley is locked up on mule drive or implement

Ryan,
Start by removing the belt as KnottyRope suggested. This will determine if the deck or mule is the problem or the clutch is. Start the engine and try to engage the PTO with the belt off. If it kills the engine again your clutch is most likely the problem. If not then look at the mule and deck pulleys to see what is seized.

Thought I would give an update...

Ended up being one of the mule drive pulleys was seized up. I'm going to go ahead and replace both of them.

Thanks for everyone's help.

I'm about to ask a question about replacing the tie-rod on the steering linkage? But want to take pictures first.

Thanks again.
