Acquired a 322 today. Just sorta going through it making sure all is well. There is a Gauge (if you will) on the air cleaner. I understand you are to change the filters (2) depending on the reading. What is this gauge reading? Is it 25? I tried hitting the reset button to do the test over, nothing happened. Didn't matter if the engine was running or not. All comments and suggestions are welcome.

Mike,
The 322 operators manual states
IMPORTANT: DO NOT service air cleaner until air restriction indicator shows 25 in. (635mm) vacuum or every two years, whichever comes first.

Have you looked at the filter elements?
I guess I am wasteful,as I change my filters if they are dirty, instead of relying on the gauge

I have a gauge on my 332. It has the duel filter set up. If your pulling a vacuum (dirty filter) it will register on the gauge. More dirt more vacuum and higher reading. Looks to me your gauge isn't reading any vacuum. Therefore your filters are either pretty clean or the gauge is broken. Btw for that gauge to read 25 (inches of water ) the filters would need to near plugged. My gage rarely moves past 7. As Doug indicated I change mine when dirty. Usually every 2 years max sometimes sooner.

Like Doug and Mike, I changed my filters when visibly dirty (...annually because of the dust/dirt at my last place...) I never saw <u>any</u> movement of that indicator -- maybe mine had a leak somewhere. My 322 has been in storage for a while now after the move, and when it gets used again I will check the elements for signs of needing replacement...I just don't trust that indicator gauge.

My 322 does not have the indicator shown and if it did I wouldn't pay much attention to it anyways. I'm with Chuck, Just check your filters every so often and Vacuume them clean, do not blow them out. Replace when filthy, a slightly dirty filter filters better than a brand new filter I believe. At least thats what the Caterpillar service tech told me that years ago and I've always believed it to make sense.

Bill,

Welcome to the WFM forums and to owning a 322 Deere (my favorite model...) The oil fill caps are there as these basic engines were used in a variety of applications where one or the other were accessible at any given time -- just use the top fill on the 322.

Changing a fan belt is about three hours of work due to just getting access. Pulling the radiator is a not that difficult and has been written up here several times. In any event you will have to disconnect the driveshaft...

Take a look at these threads:
http://www.wfmachines.com/discus/messages/335/6435.html
http://www.wfmachines.com/discus/messages/17/32585.html?1249920462

Again, welcome and post some pictures of your new-to-you 322. Here is a shot of the two that were in my herd at the same time. The one on the right is still mine...and the one on the left was owned previously by Brandon who described changing that belt in one of the threads above. Small world...

I am having some problem with the same gauge. Have had my 1990 332 garden tractor for a few years now. (LOVE IT !!) The gauge was always in the 'good' range. Had a problem with the tractor losing power and running rough when hot recently and found the gauge at 25/635 mm. Replaced the outer air filter element (which was fairly dirty). Book said to then reset the gauge by pushing it back and then re-check after replacing the primary element. I can't push it in though. I unscrewed the gauge, it doesn't move and I can't push it in. Weird thing is that the hole it screws into appears to be plugged with a piece of cork. Should something be there ?

I am planning on replacing the secondary air cleaner element also, but can't figure out this gauge. Any ideas ??

BTW, I also blew out the filter screens on the three sides of the back of the engine and got some good 'dust balls' off of there. Had to remove/clean those before, but that time the temperature was going high. Didn't see that this time.
