Ok - picked up a couple of little 111's with decks. I figured between the 2 I could get a nice little lawn tractor going.

The first one I worked on the previous owner indicated it wouldn't start. It is a newer style with the gas tank under the seat (fyi). So I spend about an hour - checked for and have a spark so I clean the plug and jump the starter - and it starts firing. Cool - replaced the plug clean the magneto do a little with the carb and prime it - it fires up and runs great.

Next test - see if it moves - put it in gear and see the spindle on the transaxle spin - but no move. I raised the mower and see the magic moving fluid has left via a hole in the transaxle.

So short story long... I find a local seller has a hydro transaxle for sell. Is it tough to swap the 5 speed and hydro on these?

Not that this post is probably valid or of importance anymore as it was from months ago.. nonetheless, may help someone else anyways.

I just did a L100 5spd transaxle swap into a L111 that was hydro where the differential failed.
It wasn't a hard to do swap, it just took time to change out the brake control rod, add shifter, remove hydro controls, belt is different length, clutch mechanism is the same.
so yeah, you would want the entire tractor you are taking the 5speed axle from as you need to swap out controls and such.
End results for me is a L111 5speed.

Have searched all these terms, here and in the service manual, can't find what I'm looking for. Maybe it's too simple and I just don't know what it's called, never torn into it before...the rear wheels are 'loose', 'wiggling up and down', just not 'tight'.

Is there a bearing in there near the hub that might be worn out...or is it something deeper in the transaxle?? Anyone steer me to an assembly of what's in there and what to look for?

Sorry to sound so scattered, am frustrated and tired.

TIA.

If axle is moving around in the hub then your probably have a bearing that failed and the continued use has left a deep score in the axle. The fix is either replace the axle which requires breaking the transaxle case or repair the axle itself. if you repair it you only have to drop the rear end. You weld into the groove and then machine/file/sand/polish it down so the new bearing fits correctly. I did this about 4 years ago and it is holding up perfectly.

OK thanks guys, that helps.

Upon closer inspection with the wheel removed, it appears that it's just the hub moving a bit on the axle and the axle itself seems solid within the axle housing/tube.

James, the bearing and it's resultant groove from failure that you mention is just inside the end of the axle housing?

Anne,

Yes, right at the end of the axle tube where the bearing is pressed in. The groove will be caused by undetected bearing failure that will eventually wear down the axle. You really can't miss the excess play between the axle and hub if it has worn that far.

Thanks James...I think this movement is just between the hub and axle, and is too minuscule too worry about, and the bearing is fine.

I just wanted to make sure while I have the pan off and everything is easy to access.
