I just repowered my 317. My kt was blowing oil out the crank seal, turns out the crank had some pretty bad slop. Shame because the topend on that motor was brand new about 4 yrs ago new pistons and new complete cylinders with valves. Priced out crank bearings and crank grind and gaskets was to much for a motor that is becoming obselete. I no I am going to get flamed on that one but this machine works hard all year.. It is a 17 yr old new never run briggs 18 hp IC on craiglist 300.00 local complete found a briggs drive shaft stubb on ebay . I used this site for all the info needed to make this happen would not have been able to without it I have some pics but don't know how to resize with the phone pictures will try to work on it

What phone do you have? on the Iphone I use a program called "simple resize" and get the down to around 480x480 otherwise the file size is still too big.

Good find on that Briggs Jeffrey. Your 317 will be working like a champ again.

Same thing happening on my Dad's old 317. Going with an 18hp Vanguard from Jims Tractors. A great machine that will take over mowing duties again and will keep the L100 for back up mower. Wouldn't get much for it so might as well keep it. Been a good machine since 2004 but love using the 317.

The crank height was about 3/16 higher on the briggs than the kohler. The drive shaft has a bit of an offset but it is completely rebuilt new bearings and pins. I think this may have caused some vibration that beat my crank bearings up on the kohler motor. I also had to add a plate across the motor mount cradle in the front to pick up the narrower bolt pattern on the briggs
