Hey, guys would it be correct to assume that a 317 with a 17hp Kohler engine that has no Spec number showing 24301 would in all likely hood be a Series I.

That spec number should be for the series II motor

24301 and up would be the series II engines...
anything under 24301 would be the series I.

But if there is no spec number plate on the engine, does that mean it is a Series I

No not exactly, there are some distinguishable differences. One of the major ones you can check is if it has the block off plate on the right hand side for an oil filter. Series I's don't have it

John if it has a plate like this it's a series II

Hi John,
Romeo and Bunky are correct in that the presence of the blank plate means a series II engine. However, early series II engines did not have provision for an oil filter (no blank plate). I have a John Deere 170 36" deck, and it is my first Deere and love it (with the plow it saved me this past winter in CT) I need to change the blades, and was thinking about the Mulching blades, can I use them with and with out the bagger? any suggestions? thanks
