Charlie,
I have the same problem with my 322 and will be repairing it soon. All the parts are still available. You will need to remove the front axle and replace the bearings and probably the pivot bolt. I ordered new plates and adjustment bolts. The parts diagram is available online at jdparts.com. I ordered a couple other things also but I think all the parts (bearings, bolts, plates, etc) for the front axle were around $90.

Gene,
You can certainly make your own plates. Do you have any high carbon steel laying around in 1/8" thick plates? How much do you figure your time is worth? Can you make them for less than $6.50? I suspect it might be cheaper to visit your Deere dealer.

Steve,
My post about the plates was just a suggestion. I made mine as an experiment. In fact I made them of mild steel and made two sets because I didn't expect them to last. Two years later the first set are still going strong. But I doubt I use my tractor as much as most. I'm retired so my time isn't worth much. But I didn't have to spend the gas and time to go get them at the dealer either. As I said, making them was just a suggestion and I enjoy making and doing those simple things on my own. So, I suggest that whatever wants to do is the best for them.

Charlie,

Price the pivot bolt before you order! It appears to be a standard grade 8 bolt, no grease fittings or cavities. I paid $20.00 + for one from Deere, they are cheaper at Fastenal.

The brass bushings made the most difference in my 317 and 318. I also made my own wear plates from mild steel and they are working well.

The pivot bolt has little to do with the sloppy front steering. The adjusting bolts are what really control the lateral movement. I have replaced bolts and not replaced bolts and could tell no difference when the axle is properly adjusted. One note if you buy a grade 8 bolt remember that there is a hole for the cotter pin that will be difficult to drill.
