Crossing my fingers and hoping this latest purchase will run decently.

A GOOD RAINY DAY PROJECT!

This is after washing at local car wash prior to putting in my shop to pull the engine.

Someone here asked about how to lift the ONAN engine. Here is how I do it.

I will remove the ONAN engine and install a starting improvement kit, new firewall insulation, new battery and fix the transmission sight gauge vent tubing which is missing. Also plan to change oil and filters if the engine runs when I get to that point!

Somewhere along the way I may have a Leinenkugel too!
That will come after I get it to run!

Got the engine out this afternoon and cleaned up the firewall.

Funny thing, previous owner did not give me a key for the tractor, said he lost it. I found it lying on the belly screen along with other dirt. It had a blue plastic tag for a Buick dealership in Michigan! PHOTO LATER.

Hello John
That 316 Sure Looks a Lot better than the one I restored for my son in law, But Given the sale price of $50.00 that I gave for it, the project was well worth the Effort. I think your's needs some fire wall Insulation.... Kurt

Well Kurt, since I paid over 16 times what you paid, I hope it looks better! Of coarse I got a 54 front blaDe and a nice 50" mower deck with new bearings and a few more extrA parts. It does need some attention though and I am working on those issues.

Twice to the car wasH was not enough for me, I need to raise the tractor at the car wash to clean some areas of the underside of the tractor.

Here are some photos of the firewall insulation I prepared for this 316.

Hello John
For Grease Build up I have found Castrol Super Clean to be the best stuff to use. It eats down through the Old Grease and leaves behind a nice clean finish when you are done. I have been using it for years inside wheel wells and engine compartment's of our cars it keeps that are looking brand new and Eats up and disperses brake dust too when used on wheels. I buy Mine at Wal-Mart and use a $1.00 spray bottle to apply it, be careful around paint in the sun it will spot it up some if the Panel is not wet with water. I hope this helps, Kurt

Cleaned firewall with alcohol before installing new firewall insulation kit.

Sprayed with WINDEX to allow proper positioning foam on firewall.

Pressing foam to firewall while PSA takes hold.

Firewall reinstalled on 316.

The exposed PSA adhesive can be wiped off with alcohol to remove stickiness after the installed foam grabs hold of the metal firewall.

I sprayed the rear side of firewall and exposed edges of the foam with jd black Blitz paint.

Well it was almost Lennie time today!

I installed the starting improvement kit, stuck the gasoline feed hose into a gas can and cranked with the choke pulled on. My spark tester showed good spark and the starter spun immediately when I hit the switch. When gasoline made it to the carb, the engine came to life and ran good. I shut it down quickly as I did not have any doors open in the shop.

Later I started it again and pulled on the head light switch. The engine quit almost immediately due to a blown 20 amp fuse. The headlight wire over the engine had been damaged and I will soon fix that.

Next step will be to start the engine again and warm it up prior to changing the engine oil and filter.

I'l have a photo later showing how I connected the starting improvement kit, which is the same as the one on my 1991 jd318 with the P218.

I was very impressed with the improvement made by this kit! Well worth the expense and bother installing it. I will add a kit like this to one or two more of my ONAN powered jds.

Chuck, for this one I purchased a new jd kit. I do have another jd kit used from the 420 I repowered with the Kohler CH740. I also have an extra relay like I purchased for the 420, bought online very, very reasonable cost.

Here is a photo of the jd kit installed on this 316.

This photo taken before I arranged the wires and secured with cable ties.

My wife "Rosie" could not tailgate with me at UNI, but our Royal Canadian Mounted Police teddy bear joined me and we had a good time. He joined us in Denali Park on our trip to Alaska this past summer and we promised to take him with us on our travels to show him some of the world outside of Canada! He is very nice, but a little quiet!

I kind of celebrated having this new jd 316 run this afternoon, I think I have taken care of most of it's problems of sitting for 3 years unused!

mORE LATER!
