Is the friction drive inside the Bendix gear on the starter of a K241 engine repairable? My starter now just spins inside the gear unit and from searches, I gather it is a friction, one way type clutch inside the Bendix gear, that has now failed.

I know a new Bendix gear can be bought but please bear with me. I am on the other side of the Atlantic pond, in South Africa. Local John Deere (JDparts) list the "Gear kit, starter drive" (AM121170) at $162. Keeping it Green (on this forum) list it for $119 to which at least $20 must be added for shipping, plus local Value Added Tax (14%), Duty and clearing, so its in the same ball park ~$160. Jim's list a complete starter for $105, but again, I have to add (more) shipping, etc.

If it can be repaired, I will gladly give it a try. Please advise.

Unbelievable reaction! I have already received an offer of a complete starter, via an email response. Here in SA we presently are experiencing a postal strike and the government run Post Office is also effectively bankrupt. So shipping could be an issue. Courier costs will be too high. Fortunately, I am not dependant on this tractor so it could stand for a while.

I will gladly pay for shipping and I am in touch with the kind offerer to get a shipping quote and to confirm a practical method of payment for it. Thank you also for your offer. I will keep you updated.

Am I surprised at the generosity of WFM members? No, not at all.

I am only familiar with sold bendix gears and is curious to know what is actually inside this one. Has anyone ever tried to open and repair the friction part? Is it possible? With your (relatively) cheap parts and abundance of used ones, I realize it would not have been out of need.

Thanks again for the offers of the part.
