we went and got a 140 yesterday at a auction and it is a our first so i don't know much about them like it to took about 15 minutes for me to figure out how to release the transmission so we could push it on the the truck.

Today i dropped a battery in and the the starter worked but didnt engage and made a squeaking noise so i pulled it off and one of the springs for the brushes where misssing and they where all worn and there was a black powder all over every thing in the starter is that normal? it was like graphite

The dust is normal. It cleans up pretty easy. I've seen brush kits on ebay. You can still buy a new starter. If you decide to replace the brushes, I cut a CD to hold the brushes down to put the cap on.

Here is my starter problem that occurred on my 120 the other day. I bought a new one from D&B electrical. I put one on my other 120 and they work great.

Matthew, did you have to shim that new starter from D&B electrical? I bought one of those for my 140 from them and it started making noise when it engaged so I took it off and the teeth on the starter gear were all mangled. Just curious.
