Gene, its a DC motor, they are quite simple to replace brushes on, its cheap and the major wear item, but bearing condition should be checked also any obvious overheating will require more involved repair, by some one experienced, which by asking precludes yourself.

you could have a bad battery connection to frame or to the starter

use a knife to scrape away the battery terminals and make sure no rust is on ground strap

I have done this on a few different old tractors and can make a big difference in starting no matter what the make

I would agree with others give everything a good cleaning and double check the safety switches if they are still hooked up. I was having a charging problem with mine recently even after cleaning the connections so I replaced the brushes and it is working fine now.

Figured I would continue on a old thread vs making a new one.

My generator doesn't seem to be charging the battery, and I'm not sure I fully understand the mechanics behind the thing. Is the function of the generator as a starter completely separate from as a generator? It will start the engine great, but when I put a volt meter on the battery while it is running the battery slowly drops in voltage.

With a car alternator I've always been able to put a volt meter on the battery when the engine is not running and get a reading of about 12v. And with the car running it reads 14v - 15v. Should the generator work the same way? My battery light also does not function. I changed the bulb out, and it must have a fault in the wiring somewhere. Honostly I should probably rewire the entire tractor as the safety switches are both bypassed. Thanks again, there is truly a wealth of knowledge here!
