You can also do an automotive one and tie into the coil and measure it off the points switching, but need to get a specific one for that.

Nice thing about the Tiny Tach that has the wrap around wire is you can use it on anything with a spark plug, especially if you get the one that has the option to switch spark timing, then you can use it on your 140, your chainsaw and your car.

Doug when you buy a Tiny Tach you have to specify it works on an engine the fires on every other crank revolution or it reads the RPM wrong.. Kohlers are one example of this type of engine. Most other small engines do what is called "waste fire" in that they fire every time the piston gets near the top of the cylinder. Waste fires fire on compression and between exhaust and intake strokes. Makes a simpler ignition system. That is why Mike said you have to order a Tiny Tach for a Kohler that is not a waste fire engine. Roger

I purchased the 1st TinyTach without telling them what it was going on. It didn't work on my single cylinder Kohler, so I sent it back and they sent me one for a single cylinder Kohler.it didn't work either. I called and talked to the owner of TinyTach. He made up another TinyTach and sent it "free of charge". It didn't work either. So I gave them both to Jim Briney.

I have a TinyTach on an LX178 I bought new in 1998.It works great and has never missed a beat.I bought one five years ago for my son's 316 Onan and a third for a 316 Onan I rebuilt the motor on last fall. All work great, but as others have said, you need to order the correct one.

I Too have had flawless performances out of the Tiny-tachs ….. been using them for 20 yrs …… Another brand is Sendec ….. it worked great too until the LCD went almost totally blank …. you can still see that it works but only if the ambient light is in the correct angle …… replaced it with a Tiny-Tach …. and thats the one on the Kohler in my Re-Powered 318 ….. that Tach was new 12 yrs ago and has handled -40 below with no issues either ….. Cheers … GK
