Hi All

I need some help on my fathers JD140 H1. It starts and run well (with a little choke - that is removed again just after start) It does not smoke ...

It run for 2-3 minutes, not then start to lag gas, so I start to give choke and keeps it running until it stops. Then have to wait 4-5 minutes and then it will run again in 2 minutes.

I concluded that the engine was not getting enough
gas. So in the weekend tried to change the gas tank - but there was no change. It still only ran for 2-3 minutes and died ..

The carburetor have been taken apart and cleaned several times ... but no cure ...

I belive that it forsure is a lag of gas problem ...

Have any body have had the same problem ?

Best regards, Erik

Erik, try a new spark plug first. If no improvement, replace the condenser and points. A bad condenser will act that way sometimes. With a "new to you" tractor, a tune up now will be preventive maintenance.
Could also be corroded or rusty connections at the ignition switch or any where else in the wiring harness. Unless the screen in the tank is plugged, I think you've checked out the fuel system pretty well.

Eric, i was talking about the needle that is held in place and moved by the float. If that is plugged the bowl won't fill very fast. I had an ariens yt11 that i got because of that problem. I found a little piece of fuel line had got stuck there.

I did not mention the easiest possible problem, and it sounds like your all set, but is the fuel filter clean and flowing?

did you try to loosen the gas cap when it starts to die? I have seen the vents clog and do what your claiming

I would try a different coil then a different condenser. The short run time leads me to believe it is a bad electrical piece that stops working as heat builds.

Tom the fact that choke helps keep it going makes me doubt it's electrical in nature. I would also expect the time it runs to vary if it's electrical with runs getting shorter and recovery getting longer. Its relatively easy to check off the list before moving on.

when it dies, can you put a tester on the spark plug to see if it is working? are your points accessable while running? what color is the sparking on the points while running? should be a faint blue, if its orange or bright could be condenser. A coil can over heat as well in that short time and reduce the spark.

Thanks for the feedback

The next time I visit my farther I will checke the valve "19" and the passage from item "20".

I belive it is a gas problem, as choke helps until the engine died

Best regards, Erik

Pull out the fitting on the bottom of the fuel tank, it has a screen in it.

Also did you replace the gasket between the block and carburetor when you had it off?

Hi All

I went to my fathers place in the weekend to work on the 140 - and found the fuel line in the carburetor inlet blocked (see the pictures). After i got it cleaned the tractor ran very well.

But then it wont not run - no spack. So I found that the "points" was brokken - where the arm push to open the arm. Is that a normal weak item on the points ?

I have never seen that, but it doesn't take much to make a defect. I have never had cam problems either. Besides checking turning re-checking the gap a few times i would expect that was a random failure.

Erik,
I've never seen that either. That's the beauty of this site. We all give advice based on what we have either experienced or what others have experienced and shared with us. I'm glad you have a direction to look for the next repair. Can you get points in Denmark for these Kohlers?
