I recently purchased a John Deere 56 from a somewhat of a fellow Deere hunter. After I was done wiping my drool off his 140, he told me that he could not get spark from it. He had purchased a new coil and points, and took apart the engine to install them. I assume he ran out of time because both the coil and the points are new in the package. Also he installed a brand new starter on it, even though it doesn't have the optional electric start. That is going on the 60 more than likely.

Soak it in oil, new master link and your good to go.

I will inspect for other faults in the chain, and replace link if none are found. Anyone know what flavor chain this is?

I think it's just plain 40 chain if memory serves me right. We had a 56 when I was a kid.
Can get 10' roll from TSC and sure JD still has available.

Judging from the tyres that machine has not worked as much as mine. Mine was bought new in 1972 and is still serving me well. Now on its 3rd engine: Two Tecumsehs and now a "Chinese" Honda under the Magnum name. I am now looking for a replacement grass catcher bag as the plastic underbelly is getting thin. NLA from Deere. Anyone know of a possible bag replacement,

please let me know.

Glad to see you posting!! I have no idea where to get a replacement bag (particularly in South Africa), but you might try a boat shop that makes covers and windscreens from similar fabrics to have a replacement made -- looks like you have a pretty good pattern there...
