I don't think so. I ordered my 140 manual from "Deerly Departed" for approx. $30 including shipping. This was the Service Manual.

No, Deere is very protective of there copyrighted material. I have searched extensively, finally just bought them. I have heard stories of them prosecuting persons who attempt to sell copies.

Ebay or WFM will be a good source to look for originals.

Some oily fingeprints and some discoloration wont stop it from being a very handy resource for working on these old tractors.

I broke down and bought the CD versions from Deere. I like the ability to print pages, parts lists, etc. They've already started earning their keep. Added bonus: They never wear out so you can give/sell them to the next owner

have a John Deere stx 38 riding mower ,older one ,electrical systems runs the motor ,when charge the battery ,mower runs and operates good ,but when pto engaged ,drains battery,motor will stay running but pto will stop working,when cut pto back on will kill the motor,but motor will stay running as long as you don't switch the pto,plus it will charge battery if run pto off ,,any ideal what this could be}}

Steven, the short answer is the charging system is not working properly or the PTO clutch may be going bad and drawing more current than the system can supply. If I remember correctly the STX38 has a 12.5 or 13HP Kohler Command engine, which has an electronic ignition that operates like a magneto. The engine only needs the battery to run the starter motor. Ignition is supplied by the flywheel magnets and the electronic module/coil. Could also be as simple as burned, rusty, or corroded wiring connections not getting charging voltage back to the battery.
If you have a volt/ohm meter and know how to use it, we can walk you through some tests to narrow down the problem. The tests will be best explained in the service manual for the tractor. If you don't have a JD service manual you can download info for the engine and it's electrical tests from www.kohlerengines.com. There won't be any info for the clutch since it is a "tractor part".

Tom, I think you may have hit it right on the nail, it will drain the battery mowing ,you can drive it across the yard, switch off and it will charge the battery back up enough to kick the PTO back on, I think that PTO clutch may be going bad, took it off and hot wired it, it seem to be kicking in ,but it's slow to kick in when on the mower, yes it is a Kohler 12.5 Command , does these PTO drag or take on more power when going out,or do they just go out completely

If they are failing they can draw more juice.

I don't have the specs. for that clutch, but most of them work best in the 3.5-4.0 ohm range. If you have an ohm meter, just plug each probe into the connector, doesn't matter which goes where. If the reading is way off, we should try to find the exact reading for the clutch you have.
Does yours have a "MAG" brand or a "WARNER" brand clutch? Most Warner brand are adjustable and the coil can be replaced if bad. The MAG brand clutches I've seen are not designed to be taken apart.
If you don't have a meter, I'd bet you have a friend who does.
