I have a 1971 140 H3, I've been trying for some time now to pull the engine. I'm having some issues. I have all the electrical removed, and the bolts holding it to the frame. At this point the only thing holding me back from pulling the engine are the two bolts connecting it to the flex coupling. I can't, for the life of me, figure out how to remove those two nuts. I've tried open end wrench, I've tried socket.... nothing fits! How do I remove these nuts!? It looks like there are two that are just for the coupling and two that actually hold it to the flywheel. Any suggestions on getting to these difficult spots? I can get an open end wrench on the nut, but there's not enough room for me to loosen the nut.

Steven,

I just took my H1 apart so here are some pics that I hope help.

In this pic, the two bolts that I have the arrows pointing to will separate the drive shaft end and I believe the flex plate from the fly wheel.

This is what it looked like after I removed the flex plate.

The way I pulled my motor was to remove the drive shaft pin on the engine side and slide the motor forward and then lifted it out.

I have mine pulled out too and was easy to take out. The problem I'm thinking of is when I put the motor back in. how do you get the screen protector back on? The 4 individual shafts that the 4 bolts go through to bolt back onto the fly wheel.

I'm going to try putting mine back in the way I took it out by just reconnecting the drive shaft to the drive shaft hub and then put the spring pin back in.

Essentially will put everything back on the engine block including the screen before placing the engine back into the frame.

As I recall the way Robert mentioned it is the way the manual states, removal and installation is with the driveshaft mounted to the engine and make the connection at the flex disk. It can be done with the driveshaft already in the tractor, but it is not fun! I replaced the forward Morflex coupling on mine with the engine installed, and it will try your patience. I simply told myself I was not going to pull that engine, especially since I didn't have a hoist to do so.

I just removed and reinstalled my motor in my 140. I seperated my drive shaft from the motor when taking it out. This however was the hard way. When I reinstalled it, it was a lot easier to bolt the drive shaft and screen to the motor and put it all in at once. You gotta remove the shield that goes around the fan on the rear end and then unbolt the couple that the drive shaft goes in. Slide that in the drive shaft the bolt the couple back up and put the set screw back in. If I had to to pull it again I'd do it the same exact but reverse if how I put it in
