Hi guys, new here was lucky enough to be given a 316 with a hydraulic tiller. It did not come with a deck however a family member had a deck from a 212 it is a model 47 I believe I am wondering if I can use it on my 316? Is it just a matter of different brackets? How about the belt size? Has anyone done this? Thanks, Mike Baker

Welcome Michael! The short answer is no. Not to say it can't be done, just not practical to do the modifications necessary to make it work. The #46 drives from a pulley in the rear, the #48 drives from the center (front) spindle pulley.

Look for a model 48 deck for 300 series tractors. You will need a mule drive to fit your 316, also. Is your 316 a single cylinder Kohler or a twin cylinder Onan model? You will need to do some research first to get a deck with the correct attachment features for your tractor model.

What I referred to as the "mule drive" is called "front draft arm & mounting bracket" in JD parts. Made somewhat differently for different model years and tractor models. There is also a model 41 deck for most 300 series tractors that need different draft arms than the model 48.
Thought I should just add this for your research.

Ed, you're just the guy that will be able to help Michael do the conversion if he decides to do it. I hope you do your usual documentation for WFM.
In the area where I live, there are very few good deck shells left of either kind for the old models. I have been patching them for a long time. Not my favorite thing to do!

Michael,

They are rare in our neck of the woods. there is a guy on Maine craigslist in the Augusta area that might have one or 5 for sale. if you don't find his add, send me an email.

The 140 had a rusty 41 deck, it was actually a 39 deck that still has the hole were the double stack pulley was located. The 39 and 41 are the same housing. So all I need to do is pull the double stack pulley off the front of the 41 and place it in the center spindle hole on the 47. There could be a problem with the blade tip speed.
