Is there any functional difference between the different regulators on the 316, 318, & 420's? I've seen differently designed regulators, but can find only one part number in the parts catalogs. Can you swap one for the other? Is one for B-series and one for P-series engines? Thanks, Bryan.

Remember the 316k is going to have a completely different regulator because its got the K-series engine.

As for the Onan's regulators If the part numbers are the same on JDparts.com then I'd say all the engines would use the same regulator.

I've only found Eric's part number in the catalogs, but I've seen different designs ... If I recall correctly, the first pic is from a B43E, second from a B43G, and the third from a B43G. The third has one connector over, instead of besides, another. Would think that the different designs necessitated a new part number. I've seen these on more than these 3 tractors ... Thanks, Bryan.

top and bottom pics are the OLD style.
with out a end view pic it is hard to tell which
is which.
B43E was 15 amp,B43G was 20 amp.
the pic in the middle is the current style.
it is rated at 20 amp
BASICALLY, you can use a 20 amp on a 15 amp circuit,
but not visa versa.
thank you boomer

you could use a transformer to power it and then check the output with a few head lights.

you will need to make sure you get enough amps out to test it under load and the transformer might be too costly for that

you would need about at least .5 kva to make it work

Super-simple, Tim. The two wires coming out of the engine shroud are "AC" and go to those terminals on the regulator. "B+" is the output, and connects to the wire that runs into the plug to the tractor wiring harness.

Ok so I have tried to trouble shoot this new to me 420. It drains the battery if left connected in about 3 days. So I found a load on the b+ wire x13 in the diagram of the voltage regulator ,about a 10th of an amp so I switched it with a spare and got the same result. Do I have 2 bad regulators ? Thx in advance Tim Dooley

Tim,

It is possible that your stator has a short to engine ground. Here is how to test your stator:

This text might be a big easier to read, and specifically pertains to the grounded condition/fault....
