The fuel cap on my 212 reads upside down when filling it but reads correctly when sitting in the seat and turning around. On my 330 the fuel gauge reads correctly when filling and upside down from the seat. If i take the rubber gasket out of the cap on the 212 it reads correctly from behind and upside down from the seat. Which is the factory orientation for the gauge?

I think correct from the rear.

Another your choice situation but I wouldn't remove the filler neck gasket. Those gauges are inaccurate so I mark the edge of the cap where empty is. That way I can tell roughly how close I am to E when in the seat or standing behind it. The same type gauges on the 300 & 400 machines are worse because of differences in tank shape/depth. I don't want to run the tank down too low, to keep crud out of the carb/injectors, so I check/adjust fuel level before each use. A marked, measured stick kept in the shop is the most reliable fuel gauge IMHO.
