Dean, As David stated: both JD Low – Viscosity Hy-Gard (amber color) or Ford Type “F” transmission fluid (red color) are approved for these hydro’s. Depending on your serial number, some members including myself have found the early hydro units <30,001 sometimes tend to whine on the newer Hy-Gard. I run both my 68’ & 70’ 140’s with Type “F” transmission fluid, and my newer hydros with Low-Vis. Hy-Gard. And I am sure you are aware, but I will also state to change the filter during this fluid change also.

“I’ve been through the desert on a horse with no name….”, and I know it can still get cold. LOL

If it were me, I would still stick with Type F or LV HG. I know Valvoline, Castrol, and Mobile still make and market Type F.

The collector and muscle car group still demands this type fluid for their vehicles. I am very surprised your local auto stores do not stock it. It is a little harder to find than most fluids, but it is out there. NAPA, O'Reilly’s, PEP Boys, and even "Wally World" has it here locally,

From what I have been told, Type FA is a more recent blend that is approved for use in the 50’s and early 60’s automotive transmissions which required Type A and also in the Ford mid 60’s – late 70’s transmissions which required Type F.

Coincidentally, the early hydro units from Deere specified Type A. So based on this, I would think you are also safe to use Type FA in your hydro (although, I have never used it). The "original" Type A fluid was a whale oil base, that would jell and go rancid as it aged.

Anyone know the amount of Type F needed to fill a <30,000 JD 140?
