For mowing only (so above 32 degrees) what weight oil and what capacity does the manual recommend for the engine. This is an earlier one with the 18hp.

I dont have a manual.

Thanks
It takes 2 quarts with the filter and should be either 10w-30 or 5w-30. My 345 has 1100 hours on it and I use 10w-30 year around and it still doen't use oil. Roger
Thanks.

Mine is a touch over 600 hours. Run a 48" deck with powerflow and it runs like a champ.
I'm with Roger, 10W-30 year around, but I do use synthetic instead of dino oil.
I use a HD grade of oil in all my equipment that still has cam followers that slide on the camshaft. I'm cautious of automotive gas engine rated oils because of the lack of zinc (ZDDP) additive.

Much has been written about this. The lack of this additive (which was to prevent scuffing of the cam lobes), was because the factories found the zinc can foul & lessen the affect of the catalytic converters & O2 sensors. The newer engines built with roller lifters and roller rocker arms don't suffer the scuffing problem, so the lack of zinc additives isn't a problem.

The older engines have shown excessive camshaft & lifter/follower wear is run hard without the zinc in the oil.

The research I've found indicates Deere's HD oil meets requirements for these older engines.
