The engine mounts differently in the 140 than the 312. I don't know if the oil pan will swap over to allow it to happen but the pan mounts to the frame on the 140 and the 312 block has tabs on it that mount to the engine cradle. The PTO should bolt up.

I put a engine from a 216, (it's the same flanged Kohler block as 312 314 and 316 closed frame)in my 72 140H-1. I left the flanges on the block. If your is a H-3 you may have to saw the flanges off. All I had to do was install the 140 pan. The gas tank touches the blower housing. Giter done .

Shouldnt have to worry about the gas tank on a 12 or 14hp, I think thats only on the 16hp.

I knew some of the more experienced voices would chime in. It seems pretty easy to me. What is in store for the 312?
