I picked up a 420 Sunday with a 60 inch mowing deck.
Man that deck is a monster! I am used to the decks for the 212's I have.
Now I can give my 318 a break from the 44 loader and the 30 hyd tiller attached to it.
The 420 doesn't run but I am confident I can get it running easily. When I get into the Onan I'll probably tear it down and rebuild it like I did with the 318 I bought.
I haven't taken the 420 or the deck out of the trailer yet. Too busy doing other things.
I'd like to get it running before the snow fly's so I can use it for plowing with that nice locking rear end it has. I have a 54 duel action blade but I'll have to adapt it for the 420 I am told. I see the top of the frame is wider. Should be an easy fab job to fit it.
So here is my question probably the first of many.
Has anyone fit a 420 with a 44 loader frame from a 318? I am pretty sure a 44 loader frame for a 318 and 420 are not the same.

Congrats, John!

For the blade mount, just cut both ends off the mount you have, weld in one inch on each side, drill out the lower pins & put a rod clear through! ~~ Lowell

John,

I've seen the mounting brackets modified before to fit a 420, but i don't think it looks the best and probably took quite a bit of work. As luck would have it though, i did inquire about the 420 subframes that were in classifieds and i was just contacted that they are available yet, the other deals fell through. i thought an extra set of frames may be a good idea to have for my 420 and loader set up, but maybe this was divine intervention here and you really need the frames.

i don't need the frames, so if you want them, let me know and you and Mike can get together on them or if not, i'll still get them and just have a spare.

Thanks for all the input guys. I will have pics up this weekend. It's still in the (enclosed) trailer. This friggin full time job of mine keeps getting in the way of all my fun time.
I won't have any problem fabbing the 54 blade to fit the 420 and the 318. I figured the loader frame would be a big difference. I was hoping someone would say, "It's a piece of cake John" HA! It wouldn't be fun if it was easy.
Yes, I am the one that posted a bunch of videos on YouTube when I got the 318.

That engine was shot. I am going to see if I can figure out the problem without removing the engine. Of course I will pull the heads and check out the cyl walls. Knowing me I'll get the urge to rebuild it as soon as I get the metal off and expose the engine. I can't resist rebuilding an engine. That's another collector hobby of mine. Small engines, Wisconsin, Onan, Kohler, Briggs mostly.
I still have the same passion I had back in the early 60's when I couldn't get enough of taking engines apart. Some of them actually got put back together as I learned! When I was oh let's say 7 or 8 I'll never forget the look on my dad's face when he came home and I had taken the wall phone apart. I couldn't understand why he was upset...all the parts were there and for sure he would know how to put it back together.
Anyway I am going on again.
I will certainly be posting the progress of the 420 Woo Hoo! I am pretty excited about this tractor.

Nick I would love to buy that sub frame but I over extended myself on this 420 and I don't have 500 bucks right now for the frame.
I was pretty excited years ago when I bought my first Deere L&G. It was a 212 with a manual blade one set of one notch wheel weights with a mowing deck. I got all that for 100 bucks. Now that was a deal.
I am officially out of room now so I will need to do allot of juggling just to get the 420 in the garage to work on it. Looks like the Silverado might have to stay outside this winter.

I finally got the 420 out of the trailer, took some pics and made some room in the garage to start diagnosing the engine problem. Man is that thing heavy. It was a challenge moving that thing from an enclosed trailer to the garage without any steering. The wheels on the 318 will turn somewhat without the engine running. The front wheels on this 420 don't move a bit when you turn the steering wheel.

Nick, Glenn,

Yeah I think that's what it is with the steering. I remember now when I got the 318 it was running. I soon pulled the engine to rebuild it and as I moved the tractor around in the garage the steering got weaker and weaker every time I moved it with out the pump running.

Well I am heading out to pull the engine on the 420. I had it all ready to go this morning at 9:30 am but a friend came by and we went over to the Kenosha county fair for a couple hours.
There were some nice restored Deere's there.

Well I got me one trashed P220.
The drive gear on the crank for the cam is destroyed as is the cam gear and the oil pump gear. This gear also mushroomed at the tips of the gear teeth and that work into the block.

No big deal just replace them. That's just bad news all around. Then there is good and bad news on the block. The good news is the the rear (non gear) side of the can shaft has worn baldly into the sleeve bearing but not into the block. The bad news is the gear end of the cam has worn thru the sleeve bearing and into the block. This is where I suspect the problem started. It finally worn enough for two teeth to hit head on and then this engine was history.

The crank, pistons, cylinders, rods and crank journals are all OK although I have not mic'ed anything yet.

There is hope and I will rebuild if the block can be repaired. I wasn't able to get the cam gear off the crank. I never had a problem getting that gear off but I have read about guys on here that had problems getting that gear off. I'll have to make a puller for it or I will just cut it off with a torch since it's destroyed anyway.

That loader makes a nice engine puller.

So I got my work cut out for me on this one.
I was hoping the engine wasn't this bad. Big disappointment but what the heck I get to rebuild another engine Woo Hoo!
